If you had been walking along the Burrows road at 7 am on Sunday, you could be excused for rubbing your eyes in disbelief as 64 competitors set off simultaneously from different tees scattered all over the famous links of Tenby golf course.
They were engaging in one of the favourite competitions in the golfing calendar, the Philip Booth Breakfast Scramble, which commences early, but concludes at the clubhouse at 11 am when all of the entrants descend on the restaurant to be provided with a full cooked breakfast, excellently prepared by the catering staff at the club led by Steve and Hilary Turner.
The professional at Tenby Golf Club, Mr. Rhys Harry, opened the shop at 6 am and many thanks must go to him for organising the eager golfers and dispatching them to the far corners of the course in time for the shotgun start.
It is a fun event, but still ferociously competitive for the prizes, which are quite lucrative, and the unique opportunity to hold the winners cup, which is equal to any in the famous display cabinet at the clubhouse.
Thanks must go to the main sponsor of the event, Mr Philip Booth, of Booth Enterprises Ltd., for being so generous in his support of the event and providing a welcoming black velvet drink to each participant on their arrival back at the club. Even if you had an enjoyable morning, but were not in the prizes, the thought of a full cooked breakfast drives you on to the finishing line.
The weather was excellent and the course was in fabulous condition, helped enormously by the recent rain and the expertise of the greens staff. The greens were slick and true, which were reflected in the scores.
The winning team carded 14 birdies in their round which, after handicap adjustments, gave them a final score of 62 - an impressive 10 under par to the standard scratch 72.
The winners with a score of 62 were T. Davies, D. Cope, P. Hoyland and M. Schooling.
Runners-up with a score of 63 were D. Lewis, H. Lewis, I. Thomas and C. Hughes.
Third place with a score of 64 went to D. Blackmore, R. Schooling, C. Gilman and S. Sutcliffe.
This was determined after a count back over the final six holes, the disappointed fourth placed team being G. Field-Thomas, R. Hall, N. Ayers and C. Thompson.
The prizes were presented by the club president, Mr. Mervyn Tucker, on behalf of the sponsor, Mr. Philip Booth, who was unfortunately not able to attend the competition, but sent his thanks to all the club members for giving up their Sunday morning to make the event the success it has been for many years.
There was unanimous agreement by all present to the event continuing and a sincere message of gratitude was sent to Mr. Booth, who has consistently supported the club over many years.
The comment of the day was, 'why can't we have more of these?'
No reason at all, just find a sponsor and let's do it!
