Concealed weapons, expulsion from school and... horseracing? Unusual words to describe young adult fiction, but there is no better combination to sum up Dan Anthony’s latest novel The Last Big One.

Pembroke-based Dan Anthony is already a well-established name on the children’s literature scene in Wales, having found success with his popular Rugby Zombies series and his 2017 children’s novel The Bus Stop at the End of the World. He has also worked on the hit CBBC series Tracy Beaker.

The Last Big One sees his first young adult title giving a new audience a taste of his unique and enjoyable writing style.

The Last Big One follows the story of Clint Williams, a teenager, whose life seems to go from bad to worse after his family move from the big, busy city of Liverpool to a far-flung town on the Welsh coast. A simple mistake gets him kicked out of school and Clint finds himself homeless and on the run. His luck only starts to change when he finds himself living on a rundown farm.

“I was inspired to write The Last Big One after hearing the true story of a boy who was thrown out of school on his first day,” explained Dan. “The novel follows the unstoppable train of events that is set off when a boy takes a flick-knife to school.”

When asked about Clint, the main character in this exciting new adventure, Dan said: “I don’t think he’d say very much - he’s a boy of few words.” He added: “Clint isn’t a bad kid, but circumstances always seem to be against him.”

The Last Big One is just what young adult readers need, it’s exciting, it’s a real novel, and it will both enthral and move its readers.
