EXHIBITING together at Art Matters Gallery during October are two Saundersfoot painters, John Adams and David Jenkins. This will be their first exhibition, though both artists have been showing and selling their work locally for some years. John Adams, despite his early interest in art, eschewed a place offered at Art College and pursued a career in housing alongside being a Naval Reservist. On early retirement from the University of West England, as accommodation/welfare officer, he moved to Pembrokeshire in 1998 - and took up painting again. He attended watercolour classes run by Georgina Jones at the Greenhill Centre in Tenby, and later enrolled at Carmarthen College as a mature student. John's paintings are predominantly in watercolour, with some acrylics. He uses a very bright and colourful palette, with strong contrasts producing vivid images of exotic flowers, faraway places and local land and seascapes in a free and exuberant style. David Jenkins's paintings also often feature strong colour but there any similarity ends. His work borders on abstract, with acrylic paint spattered and blended to produce a range of effects from soft and harmonious to mysterious and dramatic, of pasture, sea or sky. His background was in architecture and building and, although he sold his first painting whilst at school, he only painted for his own pleasure until he became involved with his local Art Society, in Llanelli, in the 1980s. He regularly contributed his oil paintings then to the society's exhibitions. The Jenkins family moved to Saundersfoot and David started to experiment with watercolour techniques before developing the acrylic and mixed media work that he now favours and has shown at Art Matters for some years. The joint exhibition, 'The colour of light', opens tomorrow (Saturday) and continues until Friday, October 29, Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. Meet the artists in the gallery tomorrow (Saturday) from 7 pm to 9 pm. Further information is available from the gallery by telephoning 01834 843375 or e-mailing [email protected]">[email protected]
