Twelve months since superheroes Gareth Scotcher and Nicky Rees touched the hearts of the people of Pembrokeshire with their amazing Long Course Weekend achievement, motor neurone disease sufferer Gareth is back with a new challenge. Whilst Nicky takes part in the Huub Wales Swim, the Tedz Wales Sportive and Newton Wales marathon, which they completed together last year, Gareth will be undertaking a tough solo cycle ride. "No I am not totally mad," Gareth, whose childhood nickname was Beaver, told the Observer. "It will be on a recumbent trike and turbo trainer - I won't actually move, steering and breaking is a bit tricky when you can't move your arms and hands!" Gareth, who was diagnosed with the debilitating disease nearly 11 years ago, will be cycling 50-plus miles on the Saturday of Long Course Weekend, July 12, which he estimates will take around five hours constant pedalling. "Training is going well and I have managed up to around 20 miles so far," he continued. "If Long Course goes ok, and I am fairly confident it will, I hope to do 250 miles over five consecutive days in August." Both challenges will see Gareth raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Paul Sartori Foundation. Gareth will be setting up his Long Course challenge just inside the gates of St. Mary's Church outside Barclays Bank. He will be begin the cycle at around 10 am, but in August, subject to permission being granted, he hopes to move sites in the town and visit local attractions. Added Gareth: "It's a tough challenge; it's hard to maintain constant cadence because of tremors in my legs caused by spacity in my muscles. It takes concentration and of course its physically demanding, but hey, if it was easy, it wouldn't be worth doing."
