Sir, Your report on the front page of last week's edition that the Police officers who met Tenby Town Council stated that "we want to create an atmosphere where more boisterous groups are welcome in the town." I do not share their wish. Some - but not all - groups of stags and hens frequently ruin weekend evenings in the town centre for others. A few weeks ago I witnessed scuffles breaking out as early as 6.45 pm in the middle of St. George's Street. Behaviour such as this, which seems to be on the rise again, jeopardises Tenby's reputation as a family resort - and has already been reported further afield. A fortnight ago, in its Travel section, the Sunday Times noted that Tenby is "a tad too rowdy after sunset for young families." That is UK-wide publicity we can do without. The extra policing promised in the town centre for the rest of the summer is welcome, but is only a reaction to a problem which should not have been allowed to occur in the first place. I applaud all those businesses that ban groups of stags and hens, but this policy should immediately be adopted by all such outlets in the town. We need to send out a loud message that Tenby is a safe and friendly resort that does not welcome, or tolerate, bad behaviour. Let's have more weekends like the inspiring and successful Long Course and Ironman events that do not require preventative policing, and not have boisterous groups in the town. The reputation of Tenby is at stake. Lawrence Hourahane,
Tenby.
