Tenby Chamber of Trade and Tourism met with the Welsh Assembly Government's Deputy First Minister and Minister for the Economy, Ieuan Wyn Jones, last Thursday, in the second of their three meetings with AM's and MP's to discuss Tenby's economic situation.

On the day that the Plaid Cymru leader launched the party's vision for the Welsh economy, with the paper entitled 'Recover, Reform, Renew: The Road from Recession' - which highlights the need to ensure that Welsh communities emerge from the recession with a vibrant and sustainable future, the Deputy First Minister travelled to Tenby to meet with local business owners.

Also meeting with the town's shop owners and traders from Plaid Cymru were parliamentary candidate John Dixon, local county councillor Michael Williams, and regional AM Nerys Evans.

"I wanted the Deputy First Minister to come to Tenby to meet with local business owners and to hear their concerns during this economic downturn," explained Nerys.

"I am aware of grave concerns within the business community in Tenby due to the seasonal nature of the local economy. I have spoken to many local business owners in the town recently who are very concerned with what the future holds and it's our job to try and do everything we can to help these businesses through this recession.

"By bringing the Deputy First Minister here we are giving business owners an opportunity to explain some of the difficulties they are facing at the moment.

"I am aware of a number of businesses that have had to close over the last few months. Now is the time to safeguard and support local businesses for the future," she added.

Chris Osborne, of Tenby Chamber of Trade and Tourism, hosted the meeting at the town's Fourcroft Hotel.

"The Minister heard views from the Chamber's members on various concerns, including business rates, vacant shops and development sites around the town.

"Support for the Chamber's proposed initiatives was promised from the visiting politicians," added Mr. Osborne.
