Fourteen-year-old Amélie Houghton, from Tenby, has been named a finalist for Young Volunteer of the Year at the Welsh Charity Awards 2026, recognising her outstanding contribution to her community.
Amélie has completed over 500 volunteer hours at Redberth Croft CIC near Saundersfoot, this year, through the PAVS (Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services) volunteering scheme, while in full-time education.
When the Farm Manager departed, she stepped up to help run daily animal care and volunteer sessions for the vulnerable adults, veterans, carers and neurodivergent people who rely on the farm. She has earned the respect of volunteers decades older than her, and inspired a new generation of young volunteers.
Amélie is one of three finalists shortlisted in the category, which celebrates volunteers aged 25 or under.
The winner will be announced live at the ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, Cardiff, on Thursday, October 15.
Commenting on her nomination, Amélie said: 'I am honoured to be recognised at the Welsh Charity Awards as I am passionate about the vulnerable animals I care for at the farm - they are such a special part of my life.
“I hope that being nominated for this award will make more people aware of what Redberth Croft community farm does for both the people and animals in our community by helping them all find purpose and meaning.”
Speaking ahead of this year’s ceremony, WCVA’s Chief Executive Lindsay Cordery-Bruce said: “The Welsh Charity Awards isn’t just a celebration, it’s an enormous thank you to the people and organisations who do great things in our communities. These are the people holding our nation together, with kindness, volunteering, inclusion and unwavering helpfulness.
“Times are tough at the moment, especially for charities and community groups. Our finalists are just a few of the thousands of people bringing hope amid the chaos. They rise to challenges, make things work even when it feels impossible and they do it with no thought of reward. Let’s shine a light on what this means and say a big diolch to everyone who took the time to nominate them.”
The Welsh Charity Awards is the only dedicated awards ceremony celebrating charities and voluntary organisations in Wales, organised by WCVA.
The Welsh Charity Awards 2026 will be presented at the Hilton Hotel, Cardiff, on October 15, hosted by BBC Wales Today presenter Jennifer Jones.
