Tenby United Youth team, sponsored by PRL Plant Hire, faced Fishguard last Friday under floodlights at Heywood Lane, and after a few weeks inactivity, got their show back on the road with an emphatic win against a brave but outclassed visiting outfit.

Starting as they wanted to continue for the duration of the match, Tenby went on the attack from the off, with the front five eager to run at the defence at every opportunity, as well as grafting when it came to the set-pieces, with Henry Boot, Luke Dedman and Tom Jones dominating the lineout with excellent support from the rest of the forwards.

Not to be outdone, the visitors tested the home defence whenever the opportunity presented itself, but the red and black wall stood firm and was determined not to get breached.

Seeing-off the expected early onslaught by the visitors, the Tenby scoring machine sprang into action, with the first of the four unconverted tries to be scored during the first half coming from a burst for the line by Matthew Jones, who was just held up. The resulting scrum ended with James Holsworth ripping the ball out of the grasp of number eight Rob Tuttle, to crash over the line wide out.

Within minutes, the lead was doubled, with Matthew Jones sliding over in the corner following a slick piece of conventional threequarter play. Getting in on the act, livewire flanker Paul Woods was next on the score-sheet when from an attacking maul he sneaked over the visitors' try line to take the score out to 15-0.

With Tenby now well in command, the half-backs took total control of the game, dictating where the next point of attack would threaten to extend the lead, and the half closed with Gareth Merriman cutting a fine running angle to scythe his way through the spreadeagled visitors' defence to score wide out and take the game into half-time at 20-0. Manager John Handicott rang the changes at the break, with Nick Drewett and John Pike replacing James Davies and Tom Jones, while Sam Foster replaced BFT, allowing Grant Rogers to switch to fullback, with Foster taking up a position on the wing.

The new formation took a little time to settle and this, aligned to some stout defending by the visitors, restricted the scoring in a very competitive half, with Grant Rogers showing his class by going over for two converted tries.

During the half, John Handicott took the opportunity for all of the squad to get into the action, with Jamie Marden coming on for the injured Robbie Clark, Ed Harper replacing the hard-working Danny Williams, and finally, Johnsey Lewis on for Gareth Merriman.

All players - the starting XV, as well as all the replacements used - showed up well and competition for places will give the management team a few headaches this week.

Despite several weeks of inactivity, the team left the field with far more positives than negatives and this week will be spent by John Handicott and his coaching team, getting ready for the expected tough County Cup encounter away to Cardigan, who already have a very close one-point victory over Tenby earlier in the season - a loss that Tenby will be more than keen to avenge, as well as striving to get into the second round cup draw for this prestigious competition.
