Playing a friendly against a very strong and big Carmarthen Quins side at Abergwili gave the PRL Plant Hire sponsored Tenby Youth just the outing they needed as they prepare for this year's league campaign.
The start, however, was not the one required as the Quins' big and burly centre crashed through a stretched defence to score from what was the first attack of the afternoon to see Tenby go five points down in as many minutes.
It was evident that the home side were intent on avenging last year's defeat when the teams met in a pre-season friendly.
The early score was followed by a period of intense pressure as the home side attempted to add to their total, but Tenby held firm.
The half consisted almost entirely of home attacks and away team defence and John Handicott was well pleased with the way his side stood up and fronted wave after wave of attacks on their line.
However, following a series of scrums, with Tenby camped on their own line, the home side eventually broke through for a converted try to take the score out to 12-0 at half-time.
With limited playing resources, due to unavailability, injury and young Rhys Thomas having an outing at first team level, manager John Handicott was well pleased with the overall performance and took the opportunity at half-time to ring the changes, with Matthew Fleming, Sam Baker and Edward Harper replacing Dan Williams, Jamie Robins and the injured Ieuan Rowell.
Carmarthen kept the pressure up right from the restart and were rewarded with another converted try from a tap and go penalty and Tenby knew they had to dig deep to prevent a big defeat. This they did, inspired by captain Adam Ball, as everybody raised their game.
They were extremely unfortunate when a searing break from his own line by Dan Colley saw his pass on the halfway line to the supporting Ross McKenzie deemed forward, and a very promising move was brought to a halt.
The pace of the game was taking its toll on the home side as Tenby slowly got on top and their efforts were rewarded with a try in the corner by Ross McKenzie, which Adam Ball converted from the touchline.
For the remainder of the game, Tenby reversed the trend, with Carmarthen now battling to stop further scores, and the game was eventually brought to a halt with the Seasiders threatening to close the gap.
