Tenby VC Infants School has many strengths and pupils generally achieve well, within a very caring and supportive environment, and the quality of provision has a number of outstanding features, says a recent inspection report. Children in Early Years generally make steady progress towards the Desirable Outcomes for Children's Learning, and are adequately prepared for the next stage in their development. However, Early Years education needs to be further developed and the outdoor learning area will be a priority with the onset of the new Foundation Phase Curriculum in September 2008. Key Stage 1 national curriculum assessment results over the last few years have been consistently above national and Pembrokeshire levels in the three core subjects, Maths, English and Science. Overall, school data indicates that the school has consistently performed better than the majority of similar schools. Value added data indicates that the majority of pupils make good progress through the school and many exceed their expected target levels. Pupils are very well behaved overall and this is an outstanding feature of the school, and the provision for pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is also an outstanding feature of the school. The school makes very good provision for PSE and also provides a wide range of extra- curricular activities, and links with the community, which is much appreciated by governors and parents of the school and is also an outstanding feature. Parent partnership is excellent and 'parents express satisfaction with the amount of participation they have in school, the approachability of staff and the happiness of their children'. The links with community and Tenby Family of Schools is outstanding and pupils are extremely well cared for in a warm, secure welcoming environment. This is a very positive element of the school. There are no shortcomings with the attendance at the school with the school achieving above the national average of 96 per cent. It is recommended that the strategies of Reading and Writing need to continue and develop throughout the school and also the need for children to develop the strategies for continued self evaluation, with particular emphasis on the way forward in their learning. The governing body with the headteacher manage the school very efficiently and effectively, and set challenging and realistic targets for the school. Governors visit the school regularly and support all aspects of school life. Financial management is very good and the school has a balanced budget with a small surplus. The clear sense of purpose and commitment to the welfare of everyone within the school community is clearly an outstanding feature. The headteacher, governors, staff and pupils of the school would like to thank the LEA for their pastoral and professional support before and after the inspection.
