Sir,
Commenting on the recent reported exchange of views regarding election for the new town councillors, it is patently obvious that the electoral process needs reforming. The councillors themselves outlined the problems of using an outdated electoral process through their statements on the need for new faces, voter apathy, the, retention of ‘old soldiers’ and length of service, a source of pride to councillors, but to others, the opposite. I am sure that there are many interested and qualified candidates in the electorate who would be capable and willing to serve on the council for a year or two, but unwilling to put themselves through the unedifying election process (leaflet dropping, door stepping, ‘vote for me’ meetings etc).
Until something radically changes in the election process (e.g. a civic duty for all jury service style), the present system will not change anything.
