Tenby Town Council made history this month by appointing two members of the Ysgol Greenhill Senedd as ‘Youth Representatives’ on the Council.

Mayor of Tenby, Cllr Dai Morgan and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Tom Sloan have been working with Ysgol Greenhill and meeting with students of the secondary school regularly over the last year.

Students Emma Nicholas and Sophie Gilmartin were chosen by their fellow School Senedd members to take up the offer of a seat around the Council table, after a presentation about the work of the School Senedd to councillors.

Councils in Wales were given the power to co-opt Youth Representatives in 2011 but this is the first time that Tenby has done this.

The two students will be able to attend meetings and speak but will be non-voting members.

Mayor, Cllr Dai Morgan remarked: "We are delighted to reach this historic milestone by co-opting two enthusiastic and driven youth members to join our ranks.

“I hope that this groundbreaking decision shows our commitment to hearing the voices and perspectives of our younger generation. I am determined that they are not only heard but valued."

Following her appointment - 'Youth Councillor' Emma said she was proud to be making history, explaining: "At Ysgol Greenhill, Senedd members have a real voice and we are listened to. I am so pleased that Tenby Council has made the same commitment."

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Sloan said that the introduction of youth members marks a significant step forward in the Council's efforts to engage with the youth of Tenby.

"Their fresh ideas, insights and energy will bring a new perspective to our council's discussions,” he commented.

"We are confident that their contributions will help us to better address the needs of all our residents."

After being appointed on July 7, two new members will attend their first meeting in September.
