'Dull, drab and dreary' were three words used this week to describe Tenby's railway station. At Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, Clr. John Griffiths hit out at the state of the station, claiming that visitors to the town by train could be forgiven for thinking they were entering a 'ghost town'. "We cannot afford to let this go any further, we must act now before the summer and before the visitors come," stressed Clr. Griffiths, who had also taken photographs of the station to illustrate his point. "The area is a complete mess and an eyesore; it seems to have become a place for people to answer a call of nature," he continued. "I've also contacted the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority over the matter, but they told me the station was nothing to do with them. "Surely, as the entrance to the town for many holidaymakers throughout the year, it should be the jewel in the crown," added Clr. Griffiths. The council had met last year with Community Rail Partnership Officer, Mark Youngman, to discuss the situation and any scheme that could be introduced to improve the condition of the station. An update report from Mr. Youngman was brought before councillors during Tuesday night's discussions. "I have and continue to push managers at Arriva Trains Wales on the scheme at Tenby the company is looking to implement," he wrote. "The Partnership also have some money to spend and have spoken about using some of it to progress any scheme at the station, but as the train company is a private company, the whole scheme is still subject to final discussion and agreement at a senior director level," added Mr. Youngman, who stated that he would be happy to meet with councillors again to discuss the matter further. Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown felt "disappointed" with Mr. Youngman's response, but welcomed the chance to meet with him again at a future meeting of the council. "It's a matter of urgency that we try and meet with Mr. Youngman next month, otherwise nothing will be done about it before the summer," stressed Clr. Mrs. Brown, calling the station "abysmal, dreadful and an embarrassment to us all."
