Concerns expressed regarding the speed of traffic on several approach roads in and out of Tenby are to be looked at by the local authorities - with data collected to form feedback for any enforcement requests.
County councillor for Tenby’s north ward Cllr Michael Williams recently sent correspondence to Pembrokeshire County Council to highlight the matter, with concerns in particular focusing on vehicles speeding along Narberth Road, Serpentine Road and Broadwell Hayes, this despite the current legal speed limit being 20mph.
“There is a particular issue on Narberth Road about which I have raised concerns in the recent past,” stated Cllr Williams.
“Bearing in mind the possible review of the 20mph speed restriction, what can be done to restrict speed on these roads?” he has asked PCC, seeking the views of highways officers.
The matter was also discussed at the recent meeting of Tenby Town Council, with Cllr Laurence Blackhall stating that some residents have expressed concerns over the speed of traffic coming into and exiting the town via Narberth Road, Broadwell Hayes and the Maudlins, Serpentine Road.
The Clerk said he had spoken to members of the NPT (Neighbourhood Policing Team) outlining concerns in relation to speeding in these areas.
They would relay this back to the NPT sergeant and had also suggested that people could flag particular hotspots on the Go Safe website so data will be captured.
Members felt in particular, there was lots of traffic on Serpentine Road which was of concern to children and families going to and from the schools in Heywood Lane.
It was noted that some years ago there were complaints about speeds on Narberth Road when the speed limit was 30mph.
It was resolved to write to Local Authorities to seek their views and ask if they believe any action is required.
In response to Cllr William’s correspondence, Senior Traffic & Road Safety Engineer for Pembrokeshire Council, Clare Williams said: “As noted, responsibility for enforcement lies with our colleagues in the Police.
“However, PCC can support this by monitoring vehicle speeds and traffic flow on the three approach roads to Tenby, helping to build an evidence base to strengthen any enforcement request.”
She said that monitoring equipment will be deployed during August at the following locations:
- Broadwell Hayes – between the junction with Heywood Lane and the junction with Serpentine Road
- Serpentine Road – between Broadwell Hayes and Heywood Lane
- Narberth Road – between The Glebe and the mini roundabout
The data collected will help identify whether there are specific times of day or days of the week when speeds are notably higher.
“With regard to the review of the 20mph limit on restricted roads in Pembrokeshire, we have received requests from members of the public to reinstate the 30mph limit on both Narberth Road and Broadwell Hayes.
“These concerns will be considered as part of the wider review process, she stated,” addding that residents/constituents should also be encouraged to report observations of excessive speed to GO safe via the following link: Report Speeding Concerns in your Community | GoSafe
