Tenby has so much to offer - stunning scenery, a fascinating history, every kind of outdoor activity, excellent food and a famous warm Welsh welcome. It is hardly surprising it is such a popular place to live, visit and work.
Does Tenby have a chance to add even more to this offer?
Headlines every day talk of the latest developments in mobile phones, iPads, apps and social media.
It is very hard to ignore the impact of this technology on day-to-day life - the opportunity to access information on the go, share experiences with friends and family and even decide where we want to go and what we want to do.
Can this technology add a new dimension to the Tenby experience? Attract new visitors? Encourage visitors to stay longer and come back more often? Make Tenby an even better place to live?
This is the question being posed by Pembrokeshire College as part of an innovative pilot project, as the college has secured funding through the Digital Tourism Business Framework to undertake the project which will create an integrated and real-time Destination Knowledge Environment (DKE) of tourism activities, venues and events for the benefit of visitors.
If the outcome of the pilot is successful, the next phase would be turning the ideas into reality. The results could be used as the basis for other projects across Wales and beyond.
The college is leading Tenby Smart Town in conjunction with the Tenby Chamber of Trade and Tourism, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and digital technology application consultants MJR Solutions.
The objective is to work with local businesses, those who live in the area and visitors to explore what might be possible.
The team will be encouraging local tourism businesses, supporting organisations, event organisers, visitors, and locals to consider how Tenby can harness the power of digital technology.
A Tenby Smart Town website is being launched to support the initiative. It will provide details of the project, updates on what is happening and opportunities to contribute comments and ideas.
Anyone with ideas they would like to share is encouraged to contact Melinda Russell, of MJR Solutions, via email [email protected]">[email protected] or by 'phone 07790 618136.
Events are being held through November and December at the De Valance Pavilion to give people a chance to tell the team what you need for your Tenby, to see demonstrations of how technology is being used elsewhere, and to explore how Tenby could take this further.
The initiative which is being funded by the Digital Tourism Business Framework Project, a Welsh Government project which is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund Convergence Programme 2007-2013, was presented to members of Tenby Town Council, ahead of their meeting on Tuesday night, with Clr. Mike Evans welcoming the project.
"The tablet and smart phone market is only going to continue to grow and this initiative will be something that benefits residents as well as visitors to Tenby," he said, with his colleague Clr. Lawrence Blackhall agreeing.
"It will be hugely positive if this project was able to be developed, and gives scope for a number of local businesses to in effect create a 'Tenby open-zone' in areas around the town.
"There is so much potential in being able to do this kind of thing, and it has already worked in other places," he added.
Tenby will be used as the tourist destination to pilot the DKE and a number of 'Visualisation Events' are being planned for the town over the next few weeks.
