Saturday afternoon saw Tenby Seconds face Haverfordwest Seconds in an eagerly-awaited league fixture.

With near perfect conditions at Heywood Lane, Tenby kicked off and with the kick not going the 10 yards there was a chance for the Seasiders to test the Haverfordwest pack at the first scrum of the game.

The Tenby pack rose to the challenge and easily turned the ball over, with the birthday boy Justin Richards picking up at number eight and making good ground deep into the Haverfordwest half. A high tackle on Richards saw the first penalty of the game, from which Mark Stevens found touch just outside the Haverfordwest 22. After a scrappy lineout, Haverfordwest came out with the ball and their backs made ground up into the Tenby half, soon to be stopped by a crunching tackle by New Zealander Matty P. The ball was turned over and excellent play from another of the Kiwis, Ash, and Gareth Nock put Tenby back on the attack. Nock stepped inside the defender and linked with elusive prop Nick Griffiths, who lofted the pass for Mark Brace to crash over in the corner. The conversion attempt failed. Straight from the restart, Haverfordwest put the pressure on and forced a mistake, to be awarded a penalty which they put into touch. Harry Bolton leapt high to steal the lineout and with Neil Duffy releasing the backs, Haverfordwest were under pressure again. A solid tackle, however, forced a knock-on in midfield. At the scrummage, excellent front row work from Tenby helped Southern Hemisphere hooker 'Ratty' to steal the ball from Haverfordwest and Justin Richards was able to pick up 20 yards out and weave his way through to score under the posts. Stevens easily added the extras to put Tenby 12-0 up after half-an-hour. After the restart, Tenby were off again, with the backs launching another attack. Haverfordwest again defended well and managed to steal, only to kick the ball dead. After a quiet spell, Haverfordwest were awarded a scrummage, which they successfully won and went blind, but their possession was short-lived as a stray pass let Justin Richards intercept on the Tenby 10-metre line to run 60 or so metres and touch down for another try, which Stevens was only too happy to convert.

From the restart, Tenby looked like scoring straightaway after good linking play between backs and forwards, only to be stopped by a brave Haverfordwest defence.

An off-the-ball incident forced Nicky Rees to leave the field with a blood injury, and he was replaced by Kiwi 'Chase'.

The next score came for Mark Stevens as result of Tenby turning over another Haverfordwest put-in at the scrum and he soon added the extra two points. Tenby went into the break 24-nil up. The half-time break was a chance for Tenby manager Chris 'Faddy' Thomas to make some changes, with Nick Rowe and Will Crockford replacing a 30-year-old Justin Richards and an already 30-something Neil Duffy.

It didn't take long for Tenby to score again, with the now dominant pack stealing another Haverfordwest put-in and Will Crockford going over for the try, again converted by Stevens.

It was about time Faddy put the game to bed and fresh legs were the answer, with Gareth Morgan, Simon Rossiter, Tom Dennis and Matthew Johns all coming on.

The next passage of play gave the crowd a rare chance to see the Haverfordwest backs in action, but it was short-lived thanks to Tom Dennis, who stole the ball and chipped through for Gethin Williams to show he's still 'got it', by gathering and touching down. Another two points followed courtesy of Stevens.

The remainder of the game was rather quiet, with Haverfordwest only having one touch of the ball. After some promising phases, Gareth Morgan popped up to stop a certain try. Haverfordwest managed to recycle the ball, only to see Harry Bolton burst through to take it away from them and he chipped through for Tom Dennis to chase and score.

A rare miss from Mark Stevens saw the final score 45-nil in the Tenby's favour.

After the game, the jubilant management team of Faddy and Bads urged the players to attend training, which is held Thursday evening at Heywood Lane. New players welcome.
