Wednesday Racing
A gusty force five southerly provided challenging conditions for Wednesday evening's club race. Only the three Ospreys of Rolly Squibbs and Marc Shepherd, Paul Redford and Steve Garvey and Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait braved the conditions for the race run by race officer Tommy D'Ortez.
A triangular course from Monkstone to the eastern then in to the harbour mark was set. Ted and Matt got away first to reach the windward mark slightly ahead. The leg in to the harbour mark was a reach too tight for spinnakers, but wet and fast across the large rollers. A gybe at the harbour mark then back out to Monkstone on a broad reach under spinnakers.
Rolly and Marc chose not to gybe at the harbour mark, enabling Ted and Matt to get further ahead; Paul and Steve chose not to gybe or fly their spinnaker consigning them to third position.
At the end of three fast laps, it was Ted and Matt from Rolly and Marc, with Paul and Steve in third.
On the way back in, a large American seal was spotted swimming just off the moorings! - after some research, a club member found its Latin name to be Mattus Wetus.
Sunday Racing
It was blowing old boots on Sunday. Four Ospreys took to the water to contest the club race run by race officer Dan Jackson. A triangular course was set for the first race, with the start at Monkstone then in to the harbour mark and back out to the eastern.
Ted Lewis and novice crew Richard Charnock decided the wind was too strong for them and retired before the start, leaving Rolly Squibbs and Marc Shepherd, Mike Stace and Deanna Morton and Paul Redford and Steve Garvey to fight it out on the water.
It was nip and tuck between Mike and Rolly for the first two laps, but Rolly gradually established a winning lead, leaving Mike and Deanna in second and Paul and Steve in third.
All boats enjoyed some fast reaching and interesting gybing without a spinnaker being seen. At the end of the first race, the competitors headed promptly for the shore and the proposed second race was abandoned.
Cruiser Racing
Just a reminder to the cruising fraternity that the ninth race of the season, the Old Castle Head race, takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at 10 am.
Junior Sailing
Yet again, despite the weather, the usual plethora of enthusiastic trainees turned up for the scheduled training session. Conditions were such that only the more experienced of the trainees ventured onto the water. The remainder were reminded of the essentials of good boat rigging, a requirement of RYA stage 1.
Many thanks to principal instructor Blake Shaw, and all who help, for making these sessions so successful.
If any member can help, please contact Blake Shaw on 842535 or Terry Evans on 844256. Again, thanks in anticipation.
As usual, Terry Evans's universally acclaimed BBQs took place, with the hordes of salivating trainees and sailors tasting some superb food. These BBQs will continue throughout the summer, so please support Terry and the club.
Adult Training
The Saturday adult training run by Mark Dashfield takes place as usual tomorrow commencing at 3 pm. It is intended to run these Saturday sessions throughout the sailing season. As per last season, trainees should contact their trainer prior to the Saturday session. New trainees should contact Mark Dashfield on 844918 or Terry Evans on 844256.
Firefly National Championships
As mentioned last week, the club is hosting the Firefly championships this year. They will take place during the week of Saturday, August 14, to Friday, August 21. At least 55 dinghies are expected, possibly over 80.
This is an important week in the club's calendar which puts a demand on resources and manpower. With less than a month to go, the planning of allocation of posts etc is underway. Commodore, Terry Evans, and the committee would be most appreciative of any help given by members and/or friends.
If you are in a position to help in any way, please contact commodore, Terry Evans, on 844256 or email him on [email protected]">[email protected], who will inform the appropriate person who has responsibility in a particular area .Thanks in anticipation.
