Club Regatta and Round Caldey Race
A warm and pleasant weekend was enjoyed by the competitors at the annual club regatta. A good breeze was enjoyed by all on Saturday and rather less on Sunday, and competition between the boats that entered was fierce.
Impeccable race management by the experienced club personnel ensured a smoothly run event and a spectacle for the early-season holidaymakers. Hard work in the clubhouse kept the competitors fed and watered and therefore happy.
Two of the visiting boats were Foiling Moths that, as their speed increases, rise out of the water and ride on their hydrofoils, not the hull of the boat. Quite a sight to behold, allowing the boats to travel at undreamt of speeds for a sailing boat.
It was a Foiling Moth that won the two races sailed back to back on Saturday, although Edward Dashfield and Emily Kirby in their RS500 managed to split them in the overall results. In the pursuit race sailed at teatime on Saturday, Daniel Jackson in his RS600 sailed through the fleet to take first position when the allotted time expired.
On Sunday, the round Caldey race for cruisers began 15 minutes before the round Caldey race for dinghies.
For the first time for several years it was possible to sail the race, although the wind for the early part was extremely light and fickle. This meant that by the time the fleet had reached Giltar point the tide had turned and all competitors found the in-rushing tide through Giltar channel a tactical handful.
Once again Dan Jackson in his RS600 showed the way to go and came home first in the dinghy fleet. In the cruiser fleet, the spectacular Corby 40, an enormous and very sleek specialist racing sailboat, led the fleet home and was so far ahead that it won despite its low handicap. The results were as follows:

How things have changed!
Junior Training
Yet again over 40 youngsters turned up for the usual junior training session which resulted in 20 club boats on the water, again a magnificent sight. Conditions were perfect for training, a good breeze in lovely sunshine, considering the adverse conditions prevailing at mid-day.
After a very productive training session, the trainees and racers were treated to the universally acclaimed Terry Evans BBQ.
Sessions are planned for every Wednesday at 5.15 pm, weather permitting.
Saturday Adult Training
The adult training sessions run by commodore, Mark Dashfield, continue as usual tomorrow. Adults who wish to participate should contact their personal trainer or Mark Dashfield on 844918. Please note places are by prior arrangement only.
Welsh Schools Championships
The Welsh Schools and Clubs Championships will be held at Tenby next Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5. Over 100 entries are expected from all over Wales. There will also be a beginners fleet to encourage newcomers to racing. Apologies in advance for possible congestion at the harbour, but its great to see all these youngsters taking part in a very worthwhile sporting activity.
Jam Evening
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the next session will now take place on Monday, July 20, not the 13th as previously stated. Don't miss it, it's the place to be!
Club Steward and Opening Hours
Our recently acquired bar steward, Nick Bolwell, is wowing members with his innovative and tasty food. Last Friday was a most enjoyable culinary experience which should be repeated this evening when Nick taunts your taste buds with a fish evening. If that's not enough there will be his usual 'a la carte' menu tomorrow and some light snacks on Sunday lunchtime.
Would members please note that there will be no food served on Monday and Tuesday evenings unless by prior arrangement. Even Nick has to have some time off. Come on down to the club and enjoy great food in probably one of the best watering places in Europe!
