Sunday sailing

It was another bright and sunny morning on Sunday, but rather cold. The wind was blowing at about force three from the north-west, creating quite shifty conditions in the North Bay for the penultimate race in the winter series.

Only three boats came to the start line, the two Ospreys of Mike Stace and Deanna Morton and Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait joining the RS500 of Edward Dashfield and Emily Kirby.

Race officer Paul Redford set a modestly sized triangular course with a windward start. All boats were promptly away, with Mike Stace hitting the line at pace and getting away slightly ahead. The two Ospreys powered ahead of the RS500 with very close crossings as they tacked upwind.

At the windward mark, Ted and Matt ducked the transom of Mike and Deanna, but just managed to lay the mark and round first. Spinnakers were hoisted and a fleet powered off towards the jibe mark, with positions maintained. After the jibe, spinnakers were carried down the following reach back to the leeward mark.

The upwind leg was nip and tuck, but this time Mike and Deanna just crossed Ted and Matt to round first, only to lose their position going downwind.

After an enjoyable four-lap race, Ted and Mat finished, first followed by Mike and Deanna and the RS500, but on handicap the RS500 was the victor.

Commodore, Mark Dashfield, again very generously provided tea, soup and bacon rolls, which were prepared by 'resident chef' Terry Evans. All the sailors and members present appreciated the gesture. Racing as usual this Sunday.

Darts

After last week's drubbing, the expectation of a positive result was, quite understandibly, very low. What a bounce back! We won! Yes, we won! Captain Terry Evans led by example by playing some outstanding darts.

Notable performances from Bob Wilcox, Mike Stace, Colin Parmenter and Rolly Squibbs set the platform for the memorable win.

The evening was a most enjoyable affair, with the Bowling Club entering into the spirit of the occasion.

This win is still being celebrated. Let us hope that members will be in a fit state to face the might of Jeffreyston at Jeffreyston on January 9.

AGM and Prize-Giving

As mentioned in a previous article, the annual general meeting proved a very positive and successful occasion. In his address to the large turnout, Commodore, Mark Dashfield, thanked the membership for their commitment and dedication throughout a demanding year. He noted the very large number of activities which had taken place during the year and thanked all those who had made these events possible.

He stressed the philosophy of the club was one of investment in people and resources, a strategy which had worked well for the club. In summing up, he said he was honoured to head such an organisation and again thanked the members for their support.

In his reply, vice-commodore, Terry Evans, reiterated all Mark had said and thanked him for his endeavour and commitment over the year. He went on to thank all who had helped on the social side and outlined plans for 2009.

He emphasised the club is well known as a warm and friendly venue and urged members to take on active roles which would enhance the reputation of the club.

After the addresses, the new committee was appointed and the meeting was closed.
