Junior Sailing
Last weekend, one of our promising junior sailors took part in the Club Youth Racing Circuit (CYRC) event held at SSC. Jonathon Morris sailed superbly in the fresh conditions to finish third overall. Well done! This Sunday, May 20, sees the event travel around the coast to Tenby - junior sailors please take note. If anyone is interested in getting afloat in a safety boat or can help on the shore, please contact Dan as soon as possible on 813397. Last week's sail and race training was shore-based due to the unfair conditions. Thanks to Mark and Blake for lecturing so thoroughly to keep the trainees occupied. Junior training afloat as usual this week. If any parents/guardians are considering purchasing a dinghy, please feel free to ask for our advice on the numerous youth classes available. A space in the dinghy park will be allocated to you by the commodore.
Club Racing
The cruiser fraternity were kept ashore by the weather for the Bank Holiday Monday scheduled race. Fatigue must have played a part after the dinghy Open Meeting the day before. This means the much-coveted Commander Lock trophy is still up for grabs, so the trophy will be contested on the next available date, which is May 19, so come on John! Sunday's dinghy race for the South Beach Challenge Cup was a damp affair, with constant rain and a bumpy north-easterly in the North Bay. The fleet launched and as the race started chaos reigned as the windward mark seemed to vanish behind the swell. With a new mark chosen, the Ospreys powered through the breaking waves, throwing off a wall of spray and, rounding the mark, the spinnakers came up and everyone was surfing downhill to the gybe mark. Good spinnaker work by Ted and Matt saw them hot on the heels of Rolly and Marc in the exciting conditions. A testament to how quickly they have got to grips with this new and powerful machine. After three laps, the RS600, which managed to plane and surf upwind and down, had the advantage and took the win. South Beach Challenge Cup results: 1. RS600 Dan Jackson; 2. Osprey Rolly Squibbs and Marc Shepherd; 3. Osprey Ted Lewis and Matt Goldwait. Congratulations to Ted and Matt for their first podium finish in the Osprey - well done boys, keep up this learning rate and you might just catch Mr. C! Whispers heard in the dinghy park this week indicate the imminent arrival of three more Osprey dinghies to boost the club fleet - watch this space. Many thanks to the safety boat crew of Max and Peter Randles and Dr. Sian May for running the race in such miserable conditions; your work is very much appreciated.
