After problems in awarding the contract for the erection of Tenby's Christmas lights earlier in the year, the town now looks on course for the festive switch-on on December 8, it was revealed on Tuesday night.

Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward told fellow town councillors at their meeting this week that G. and I. Builders, who had volunteered to erect and maintain the lights, were now well on the way to completing the festive displays.

Earlier in the year, Tenby faced a festive black-out as tenders received for the erection of the lights had been in excess of the budget allowed by the town council.

After several appeals G. and I. Builders had stepped into the breach and "are doing a good job," Clr. Mrs. Ward opined.

Clr. Mrs. Ward revealed that the council had had to spend "quite a large amount of money" on new boxes, wires, stainless steel hooks and 600 metres of new lighting for this year, but hoped that a rolling programme could be initiated next year to increase the festive displays around the town.

Clr. Mrs. Ward added that the erection of the lights had not been without problems and apologised for any disruption caused by the use of a 'cherry picker'.

"Unfortunately, it's the only way we can get the lights up," she said. "However, things are progressing nicely, the tree is being delivered on November 23 and we are on course for the switch on for the Winter Carnival."
