REHEARSALS are in the final phase for 'The Lion in Winter' by James Goldman, the Tenby Players' Easter production. This award-winning historical drama about King Henry II and his Court is set in his castle at Chinon, France, during Christmas, 1183.
The story revolves around the vitriolic and lacerating relationship between Henry and his wife Eleanor, and the constant obsession with power and intrigue to decide which of their three remaining sons should succeed Henry as King. Alais Capet, Henry's young mistress, and her brother Philip, the King of France, complete the cast in this fascinating and historically accurate glimpse of the English Court of that time.
'The Lion in Winter' was a great success on Broadway and London's West End, and starred Peter O'Toole as Henry in the highly praised film version that followed. Len Harvey is directing the Players' production, and his cast of Hilary Harvey, Robyn Hickling, David Owen, Andrew Davies, Steve Butler, Lloyd Ayris and Stephen Perkins includes several winners of acting awards or nominations in recent Pembrokeshire Play Festivals.
'The Lion in Winter' can be seen at the De Valence Pavilion in Tenby on April 17, 19, 24 and 26, and at the Queen's Hall, Narberth, on April 25. At both venues, the doors will be open at 7.30 pm and the curtain time will be at 8 pm.
