On Thursday, we held a concert at St. Mary's Church in aid of the Pembroke Gateway Club. The gateway clubs are all affiliated to Mencap and provide social and sports clubs for people with a learning disability, so we were pleased to support this very good cause.
During the intervals between choir sessions, Paul Varallo once again performed as the main soloist, with Huw Morris acting as soloist for My Little Welsh Home as part of a trilogy of three Welsh songs.
We also like to give the opportunity for young local musicians and once again we were pleased to feature Corey Morris (no relation to Huw!). Once again, Corey gave an excellent, foot-tapping performance on the trumpet to the delight of the audience. A particular success was My Way, made famous by Frank Sinatra, of course.
Corey has been playing the trumpet since he was eight and is a well-established member of the Greenhill School Orchestra, Wind Band, Jazz Band and Symphony. Corey has performed solo spots for a number of other local organisations and has won a number of prizes. Perhaps his high spot to date was that he featured in the film Hunky Dory starring Minnie Driver which was great experience for him. Corey has been awarded a scholarship by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and will begin studying a Bachelor of Music degree at the Royal Welsh College in September. Corey's ambition is to be a professional musician and we wish him the best of luck in his career.
It's always particularly encouraging to see young people involved in music. In our own field of male voice choirs we see performances from people like Only Men Allowed in the UK, Chanticleer and Cantus in the USA, Gents and Frommerman from the Netherlands, there are famous young men's choirs in Estonia, Poland, Russia, Canada, and probably every corner of the world.
We would certainly like to see more young people come along to the Tenby choir where they can both contribute to and learn from our talented musical director Ian 'Wilbur' Williams.
So don't think you are too young if you are interested in or keen on joining us or just interested in finding out more. We're not a bad bunch, some of us still have teeth and hair and we all definitely have a sense of humour.
But of course we also welcome the more senior citizens to the choir and to our audience and it was good to see one of the raffle prizes at the last concert going to one of our 'regulars'.
Wherever we hold a concert, we can be almost sure of seeing two regular faces in the audience Peggy Morgan (a former piano teacher and mother of choir baritone Kevin Morgan and accompanist Jill Williams) and her stalwart companion Jean Jones-Davies. We can always rely on them to give us an informed opinion of how we've done on the night.
The choir recently decided to reward regular attendees at our concerts with a TMC Associate Membership Card and for most concerts this will allow entrance at the discounted price of £5. If you believe you might qualify for one of these, just mention it to one of our choir members at a concert and it will be considered.
The concert season is now in full swing and by the time this report goes to press, we will already have performed six concerts out of our planned programme of 30 concerts for this year.
The next concert to be held is in aid of the NSPCC at St. Mary's Church, Tenby, on Thursday, May 2, starting as usual at 8 pm. So, if you want to support this worthy charity or just want to have a good night out come along to see and hear us on that night.
There are lots of ways to find out more about the choir, including links to some of our recorded videos. There is a website http://www.tenbymalechoir.org">www.tenbymalechoir.org and a Facebook account (just Google Tenby Male Choir Facebook) or if you prefer to meet us face to face, just come along for a drink (if you're old enough) and meet some of the choir after one of our Tuesday or Thursday rehearsals. We finish rehearsals at 9.30 pm and there are always a number of the choir who stay behind for a bit of banter before going home. You will always get a warm welcome and any information you need.
A.G.K.
