Tenby and District Lions Club are launching the collection and recycling of used spectacles to help improve and restore the sight of people in the Developing world.

90 per cent of the world’s Blind and Visually Impaired population live in these countries 80 per cent of which can be treated.

Almost every house has a pair of old and unused spectacles. Small litter bins appropriately labelled are being placed in opticians and other strategic places for the collection of these unwanted spectacles.

The spectacles are then put into boxes and sent to Medico in Le Havre France where they are sorted, cleaned and graded ready for use in eye camps and clinics in Africa, India, Eastern Europe and SE Asia. Millions of people have had their sight improved or even restored through the recycling and refurbishing of old spectacles

The Tenby and District Lions Club wish to thank Mr Bullock, the manager of Tenby Market for permission to have a spectacle collecting bin in the Market; Paul Hodge, manager at Tenby’s Tesco Express; and Matt MacDonald manager at Saundersfoot’s Tesco.

They are also grateful to have collecting bins in Penally and Jameston Village Halls and in the Community Hall in Kilgetty as well as Manorbier Church.

Anyone else interested in helping the Lions to collect these spectacles please contact Derek on 01834 218294.
