Tenby Museum and Art Gallery is pleased to announce the first of their series of Annual Lectures starting today (Friday) at 7.30 pm.
Local historian Tony Galvin, author of 'Sea Of Change', will tell the fascinating early history of the lifeboats in Tenby.
These boats were very different from the hi-tech vessel we have today.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institute began in a small way with local coastal communities of fishermen and seafarers going to the aid of those in trouble at sea.
Their boats were generally powered by teams of oarsmen and often had the ability to raise a sail if conditions were favourable. Eventually communities purchased a specific boat for the purpose and lifeboatmen were organised into teams.
Using many unusual photographs of the early boats and the men who manned them, Tony will explore the proud history of our early lifeboats.
Tickets are £5 (£4 with Friends membership).
Booking is advisable as places are limited.
