FISHGUARD LADIES 0 TENBY LADIES 3

Tenby Ladies travelled to Milford Haven on Sunday to play Fishguard Ladies. With the rain drying up and the sun coming out, Tenby fielded an XI consisting of two of their U18s players due other commitments by some of the seniors.

Tenby settled to play a smooth passing game, keeping possession and resulting in the pressure that forced the first goal. A penalty corner was awarded which hit the back board from Miriam's clean strike.

Tenby continued this pressure, which was rewarded wikth yet another penalty corner, struck by 'Barney' and swept into the goal by Mandy Lewis on the post.

Fishguard did break several times, but were thwarted by the experienced Tenby defence. The third goal started at the back from a 16-yard hit out by Michelle. The ball took a deflection, which resulted in a long corner at the other end of the pitch. Julie struck the ball sweetly to find Miriam, who with one touch, swept the ball into the back of the net, to make it 3-0 at half-time.

In the second half, Fishguard penetrated more of Tenby's half, mainly through counter-attacks on the break. However, they couldn't find a way through the Tenby defence and Jo, making her debut in goal for the seniors, remained unchallenged. The few shots Fishguard did produce in open play went wide and even though they were awarded several penalty corners, they were unable to capitalise and score.

Mandy and Barney both had chances to add to Tenby's score, but their shots fell wide. Fishguard, for their part, played with determination to the final whistle. Well done to Leonie and Jo playing in their debut game.

Squad: Joanne Thomas, Ruth Ferguson, Michelle Johns, Rachel Davies, Julie Jones, 'Barney' Squire, Mandy Lewis (capt.), Miriam Brown, Alex Pearce, Bryony Rees, Leonie Evans. Many thanks to umpires Dianne Davies and Bernie Wheeler, coach Dave Miller, photographer Nigel Roberts and the travelling supporters. Tenby's next match is the quarter-final of the West Wales Cup, 2 pm at Pembroke, this Sunday, against Clwb Hoci Dinefwr A'r Fro.
