UNDER 9s
The Under 9s travelled to Pontyberem on Sunday. It was dry and the boys seemed ready for a good game. From the whistle, Tenby showed some good handling skills and were prepared to pass the ball out wide. Pontyberem defended well and even though Tenby had the majority of possession and territory, they couldn't convert this into points. The home team scored the first try and shortly after, a second. Tenby, although playing well in attack, were missing too many tackles and this allowed Pontyberem to gain ground every time they had the ball. A soft third try followed before the half-time whistle and Tenby needed to defend better if they were to have any hope of staying in the game. A couple of minutes into the second half saw Joshua run out wide on the wing to score Tenby's first try and even though Tenby still had the advantage in attack, they kept missing tackles which was costing them dearly. Jerome Mansbridge was trying to punch holes in the defence and this eventually paid dividends with him scoring Tenby's second try. Elliott Williams had some excellent breaks and was definitely up for the challenge and he was unlucky not to get an equaliser. The last couple of minutes were tense as Tenby tried everything to get one last score, but they eventually lost three tries to two. Coach Chris Williams warned the boys that tackling would be top of the agenda for Thursday's training session. The Ashmole & Co. man of the match award went to Elliott Williams for his good all-round performance. The Tenby team then played Penygroes, who were also visiting at Pontyberem. The Tenby team were again taking advantage in attack, but still missed too many tackles. Jerome Mansbridge had clearly warmed up from his first game and was running rings round the opposition and he scored the first two tries for Tenby, with Ryan Price scoring the third. Ryan was unlucky later on not to have scored a second. Joshua scored again from the wing position and Jerome scored an excellent individual try to round things off, with the final score being Tenby 6 Penygroes 3. The Ashmole man of the match award deservedly went to Jerome Mansbridge. After the matches, the boys were treated by coaches Chris Williams and Anthony Mattick to a trip to Stradey Park to watch Llanelli and Glasgow and to see what a difference tackling can make to a game.
Under 8s Last Sunday saw the team travel to St. Davids on yet another fine but cold day, but received a warm welcome as always from St. Davids RFC. From the kick-off, possession was gained by Archie John and after a darting run, the ball was passed through the hands of Luke Burrows and Richard Lewis, before brother William was stopped just short of the line. St. Davids responded immediately and put in some excellent passes, before running in for the game's first try. Dylan Williams took the restart for Tenby and set Donovan Griffin off on a nice run, before good hands from William Lewis put in Luke Burrows for an equaliser. The first half continued as it began, with both side matching each other try for try. Luke Burrows grabbed three (and showed some very strong running), with Archie John and Richard and William Lewis also getting on the score-sheet. Dylan Williams kicked off the second half with a corker of a kick, placing the ball deep in the St. Davids half. The second half continued like the first, with both teams producing some excellent play. Tenby scored again through Luke Burrows, but the try of the game came from William Lewis, who was lucky enough to be at the end of some excellent passing. The move began with young Donovan taking the restart and saw Archie, Luke, Dylan and Owen all getting involved, before a lovely spin pass from brother Richard put William away. Archie John then ran in for his second, making the final score an eight-all draw - an excellent effort by them all. Training will resume at The Clicketts on Thursday, January 6, between 6 and 7 pm.
