The Swifts Under 14s got their season off to a flying start under new captain Matthew Davies, by demolishing a plucky Blues outfit by 87 points to 10 at Heywood Lane last Sunday. Last year's Pembrokeshire champions played to their full potential, with both forwards and backs combining in a sparkling display of fast, open rugby. Haverfordwest had given these Swifts something of a scare in the semi-finals of the Cup back in April and came to Tenby with great expectations. However, they found a Tenby side that clicked into gear like a well-oiled machine, which took off as if there had been no long summer break from rugby. Thirteen tries were scored and 11 converted against a team that was not allowed to get into the game, despite possessing a smattering of District players and were generally quite useful. A hat-rick of tries was scored by Chris Heesom in the first half, with Yannick Parker and Patrick Roberts grabbing two each. Jamie Williams, Daniel McDermott, James Criddle, Thomas Nash, Jack Baker and Roy Osborne all scored a try each, with Patrick Roberts converting 10 of them and Jack Guerrero slotting one. Those who did not get on the score-sheet played a vital role in the proceedings, with Sam Ferguson, Gareth Lawrence and Andrew Evans showing strength and committment in the rucks and mauls, while Jason Ronowitz and Joseff Morris were prominent in the lineouts and loose. Kiefer Thomson provided a quick service from the base of the scrum to new fly-half Jack Guerrero, who settled nicely into his new team. Finally, captain Matthew Davies, playing out of position in the centre, proved as steady as a a rock and motivated his team well. The Swifts now look forward to sterner challenges to come and none promise to be more testing than Hendy, who make their first visit to Heywood Lane on Sunday. Tenby team: James Criddle, Thomas Nash, Matthew Davies (capt.), Jamie Williams, Chris Heesom, Jack Guerrero, Kiefer Thomson, Sam Ferguson, Yannick Parker, Gareth Lawrence, Andrew Evans, Daniel McDermott, Jason Ronowitz, Patrick Roberts, Jack Baker, Roy Osborne and Joseff Morris.
TENBY UTD Under 11s 4 tries HAVERFORDWEST Under 11s 9
Tenby Under 11s began the new season, in new kit kindly sponsored by Rowston Holiday Park and John Francis, by playing host to Haverfordwest. Tenby started off in their characteristic slow manner and were off the pace in the first-half, in contrast to Haverfordwest who came out looking fresh and hungry. The home side was guilty of repeatedly standing back allowing Haverfordwest both time and space with the ball. Missed tackles, poor support and a lack of fight contributed to the home team going in at half-time six tries down. But Tenby did not give up. A wake-up call from coach Myrddin saw Tenby start the second-half a much more competitive outfit. The forwards looked tighter and more organised, using the rolling maul to good use, with Dylan, Cameron and Matthew, repeatedly carrying the ball forward to make the hard yards. David Duckworth and Jack did a commendable job clearing out the opposition in the rucks, allowing Joe D. to provide his usual reliable service to his backs. Eventually, the hard work paid off with powerful charges by Matthew, Jack and Cameron, all resulting in tries. The backs also enjoyed a bit more quality ball in the second. Joe F., whose kicking was excellent, used the crash-ball straight down the middle to good effect, linking up on a number of occasions with the always solid Elliot and David Dumfee, who got a late try after a strong individual run to get in at the corner. With a number of regulars missing from the team Tenby had the chance to field five new recruits, Adam, Ben, Joe Josh and Scott. Against such a formidable side this was always going to be a difficult induction for the new boys, but they showed a lot of character and potential. Tenby fielded: Cameron Wood, Dylan Griffin (capt.), David Duckworth, Matthew Lewis, Jack Butler, Joe Dennis, Joe Farrell, Elliot Randall, David Dumfee, Adam, Ben, Joe, Josh, Scott. Coaches: Myrddin Dennis and Dave Randall.
Tenby Utd. U10s 6 tries Haverfordwest U10s 1
Tenby's Under 10s picked up where they left off last season with a comprehensive victory over visiting Haverfordwest at the Clicketts on Sunday. Following on from some outstanding performances during 2003/04, efforts have been made to strengthen the squad to cope with the new demands of scrummaging and lineouts that have come into play this year. On the evidence of Sunday's performance, the team has picked up the new skills very quickly, everyone coping well with the newfound separation between forwards and backs that will provide a greater structure to play. Captain for the day Jordan Jones lost the toss and the Seasiders received the kick-off from the visitors, driving strongly into the heart of the Blues' defence. The skipper was at the heart of the action, using his strength well in the maul situation to turn over possession on a number of occasions. His lead was followed by fellow front row men Calum Weakley and Ryan Absalom, both of whom made powerful forward charges that sucked in would-be tacklers and released the ball for the home side's pacy backs. In the engine room of the second row, Jake Vickery showed his power and skill, taking numerous lineouts, ably supported by Ross Hurst, who performed well, having been brought into the pack at short notice. The home forwards were dominant throughout the game, allowing the Seasiders' exciting backs to make inroads almost at will. Corey Morris bossed the game from scrum-half, providing the link between his pack and showing great awareness in sniping up the blindside for a well-taken try. Jack Murphy slotted into the outside-half berth with great assurance, running strongly with the ball as well as doing more than his fair share of defensive duties. His hard work was rewarded with a brace of tries, the visitors having great difficulty in bringing him down. In broken play, there is no more dangerous runner than Dan Fairlie and he once again showed his value to the side with a hat-trick of scores. He also looked to offload the ball to players in support, showing that he is maturing as a player. Outside Dan, Ryan Lewis and Nathan Farmiloe tackled bravely throughout and offered some pace on the flanks that gave Tenby increased attacking options. During the second period, the home side was in the fortunate position of bringing on no less than three substitutes. Rhydian Lawrence slotted back into the squad comfortably, quickly getting accustomed to the pace of the game, while Kyle Marsh put in some important defensive work showing that he is a much-improved player. Newcomer to the squad, Ben Simmons showed great awareness in what was his first competitive outing and will have benefited from the experience. The only blot on the home side's copybook was an untidy try conceded late in the first period after some sloppy defensive work when the Seasiders failed to clear their lines. This is something that they will look to work on in the coming weeks. Overall a great start to the new season for the Under 10s, who will hope to build on the success and enjoyment of last season. The team trains at the Clicketts from 6.15 pm every Thursday. Anyone who wants to come along and join the squad will be warmly welcomed.
TENBY UNDER 9s 3 tries HAVERFORDWEST 2
Twenty players turned out for the first game of the season at The Clicketts on Sunday morning and the coach, Chris Williams, was happy to announce to the team the birth of his daughter during the early hours. A mix of Under 8s and Under 9s had practised tackling only twice, but were ready to put their new skills to the test against Haverfordwest. Both teams took a few minutes to find their feet, but Elliott Williams had a good break to get Tenby into Haverfordwest's half and the the pressure resulted in a try for Oliver Parsons. There was some solid defence from Oliver, Robert Davies, Ellis Morgan andTomas Sarrionandia, with some sniping runs from Jerome Mansbridge. The first half saw end to end action, with the two teams very evenly matched and both having some good individual runs, with a one-all score line at the break. Tenby started the second half stronger and made a number of substitutions to allow all the players to have a game. Joshua showed why he's the 'Billy Whizz' in the Tenby team, with two excellent darting runs resulting in two tries. Haverfordwest came back strongly with an equally good individual try, to finish with the final score, Tenby 3 Haverfodwest 2. Mr. Bryan Jones, of Ashmole & Co. Accountants, was in attendance and offered his support to the Under 9s for the forthcoming season by sponsoring man-of-the-match trophies and an end-of-season shield. Mr. Jones nominated Oliver Parsons for the first Ashmole & Co. man-of-the-match award. Anyone wishing to join the team is welcome to go along to the Clicketts ground at 6 pm on Thursday evenings.
