Friday the 13th can be known as unlucky for some, but not for Greenhill's Under 13 Girls Football team. The girls had previously won the West Wales competition in Swansea, in order to go through to the next round to represent Swansea City at Bristol's Filton Sports College.
Moving a step up in the ladder, the girls faced tough competition against seven other teams from all over the South West of the UK.
The first game was played against Exeter City, who scored two quick goals past 'keeper Caisie Paxton, although Holly Furlong managed to score before the final whistle.
Although the girls lost, they were far from disheartened and went on to give six fantastic performances and did not concede another goal during the whole competition thanks to excellent work from all girls, especially goalkeeper Caisie.
In the second game, the girls ran rings around Plymouth Argyle, with Kirstie Lewis, Becky Gwyther and Holly Furlong (2) managing to score in a 4-0 win.
Cardiff City were well prepared for their rivals Swansea City in the third game, although Hannah Taylor, Becky Gwyther and Jess Webb all battled well in the centre, and thankfully after many shots on goal, Holly Furlong managed to sneak one seconds before the end of the game.
Nicole Bevans was a great man-to-man marker during her games and definitely took charge against her opponent on many occasions.
Game four was played against Bristol City, and again the girls played with style and battled hard to gain a 3-0 win.
Some excellent saves came from Caisie Paxton, as well as some fantastic play from all girls. Jess Webb managed to grab a goal from a great shot from almost halfway and Kirstie Lewis followed suit not long after to gain another goal. Hannah Taylor and Becky Gwyther had many shots on goal, but were unlucky, until Holly Furlong managed to strike lucky with her orange boots once again.
Yeovil town again were good competition and it took the girls a while to score against them, but well deserved goals came from Becky Gwyther (2), Kirstie Lewis and Holly Furlong, to earn a clear 4-0 victory and gain another three points for the table.
The final game against Bristol Rovers was the decider of the competition, and little did the girls know they were still in a position to win. They put in a huge fight for the six minutes of play, and Nicole Bevans again took control of her man-marking, which left Rovers with no striker. Jess Webb defended well, with Kirstie Lewis not allowing the opposition to shoot at any time and some great attacking play was shown from Becky Gwyther and Holly Furlong. The game ended in a 0-0 draw after some cracking saves from Caisie Paxton; which resulted in an exciting outcome to the competition.
The league points were added up and with Swansea City level with Exeter City, it came down to goal difference to reveal the winners. After a nail-biting countdown, the girls jumped with excitement when they found they had won the whole tournament, putting Swansea City one step away from playing a final at Wembley Stadium.
The next round will consist of the winners from the South West (Swansea City), South East, North East and North West of the UK in order to leave two finalists.
The girls deserve to go all the way and should be very proud of the standard they have reached already. Huge congratulations go out to the following girls and the best of luck in the next stage - Caisie Paxton, Nicole Bevans, Jess Webb, Becky Gwyther, Holly Furlong, Hannah Taylor and Kirstie Lewis.
A thank you also to Mr. Williams (5x60 officer) and Mr. Kerrison for their support and getting everyone to Bristol.
