Punch and Judy, the famous children's entertainers, were on hand in Tenby this week to help Royal Mail launch their special edition stamps, entitled 'Punch and Judy.'
Children's entertainer, Phillip Jones, accompanied Punch and Judy to the resort where they entertained local children and launched the special stamps.
Royal Mail is celebrating more than 330 years of slapstick and satire with its issue of Punch and Judy stamps which were available from Post Offices from Tuesday.
A setenant strip of six 1st Class stamps features Punch along with fellow puppet icons, the Policeman, Crocodile, Clown, Beadle and of course wife Judy.
Punch and Judy first appeared in the Centenary of Picture Postcards stamp issue. In fact, Punch has been 'cocking a snoop' at British society since at least 1662 when Samuel Pepys wrote of witnessing a performance in London's Covent Garden.
Since then, Punch 'Professors' have carried on the tradition mainly at seaside resorts up and down Britain, updating the story for modern times.
Graham Jones, Royal Mail area manager for South West Wales, said: "Royal Mail's 2001 stamp programme is all about celebrating national obsessions, including the weather, fabulous hats and cats and dogs. Punch and Judy is undoubtedly a part of our heritage and is a well known and age old entertainment familiar to anyone who has ever summered at a British seaside resort."
"Tenby is one of Wales' best known and well loved seaside town, so where better to launch these very special stamps?"
