The storm buffeted the exposed building of Tenby Museum a week last Tuesday as members of Tenby Historical Society huddled inside to hear historian Bill Snellgrove describe the life of Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen.
They heard about the dangers faced by the young Elizabeth when Mary Tudor was on the throne and about the skill with which she used her marriageable status to form alliances in Europe. They heard about how she coped with the threat created by Mary Queen of Scots and the irony whereby Mary's son became her successor.
They also heard that contrary to some fashionable ideas, Elizabeth (in the opinion of Bill Snellgrove - although he confessed to not having direct evidence) remained a virgin to the end of her life.
The next meeting of the Tenby Historical Society will take place on Tuesday, February 6, when Peter Stock will talk on the fruit trade of Pembrokeshire. The meeting will take place at 7.30 pm at Tenby Bowling Club. Non-members are welcome.
