Sunday saw the third annual Pro-Am competition at Tenby. Instigated in 1998/99 by the then captain, Miguel Gonzales, the object is to allow professionals the opportunity to compete against each other and club members to play with professionals.
Twenty-seven teams of four (one professional and three amateurs) competed, with all teams being sponsored, mainly by various local businesses or organisations.
The professionals had a separate competition of their own, while for the main competition, the two best net scores on each hole were to be recorded (pro included).
First home was the team led by pro Steve Bowen, of the Rhondda GC, with Mike Neville, John Morris and Rob Hall, sponsored by Harvey Lloyd £1 Shops.
Interesting to note that John went round in 66 net, his hole-by-hole score featuring 15 times out of 18. No wonder some pros raised their eyebrows - off a handicap of one as well.
In second place was pro Jonathan Clewett from Clyne GC partnered by Mike Williams, Ian Thomas and Paul Hoyland, sponsored by Alexander Partnership, while in third spot was Gary Hopkins, of Pontardawe GC, with new club manager Basil Warren, Leon Clay and Dave Cartwright, sponsored by Mendip Mist.
It would appear that the new manager has brought friends with him!
Fourth place was claimed by pro Mathew Wootton, of Lakeside GC, partnered by Tim Hughes, Chris Hughes and David Hughes. No prizes for guessing who the sponsor was - T. P. Hughes, of Tenby.
In fifth place came Darren Griffiths, of Parc GC, joined by Simon Rossiter, Richard Ormond and Nicky Allen, finally sponsored by Rossiter and Sons.
The professionals competition was won by unattached John Hansel with a score of 65. John was sponsored by Castle Energy Services. In second place with a score of 66 came Gary Hopkins, again sponsored by Mendip Mist, and James Lee, of Cardiff GC, was also in the money in third place, this time sponsored by the Giltar Hotel and Tenby Ladies.
At the prize-giving in the evening there was cash for the pros and golf equipment for the five leading amateur team members.
All competitors considered it to be a wonderful opportunity to play in such company, and hoped to be able to play again next year.
Tenby Golf Club would like to thank all the sponsors of the teams and raffle prizes, the starter Gwyn Tibbs and the instigator-cum-organiser Miguel Gonzales.
