OPEN MEETING
The date of an open meeting is usually set a year in advance and hoping a fine day has been chosen is of prime concern, particularly this year in rather damp Britain.
Thursday, September 23, was dry from about 9 am, for which the ladies' committee was delighted as this was the time when our visitors began playing, so we were luckier than it seems the Ryder Cup committee will be!
In these stringent financial times, it was thought the entry would be down, but some very diligent marketing by the ladies meant 102 players took part.
The competition was played in teams of three, with the two best scores on each hole counting. To keep everyone going on what has become recently a much longer course, each group was supplied with bottled water and Welsh cakes, which was a delightful touch. Play next year and who knows what you may be given!
All the players seemed to enjoy their day at Tenby and it was good to see so many at the presentation of prizes at the end of the meeting.
It is clearly indicative of the difficulty of the course that so many of the prizes were won by home players.
Results: 1. Marion Clarke, Nesta Hart, Isobel Kent (Tenby); 2. Jean Charnock, Helen Morgan, Gillian Roberts (Tenby); 3. Elspeth Owen, Sarah Bevan, Jayne Noble (Haverfordwest).
Longest drive 14th - Anita Davies (Tenby); nearest pin 6th - Linda Evans (Tenby).
PEMBROKESHIRE CAPTAINS ASSOCIATION
This society has been in existence for some 40 years and holds two meetings each year, a foursomes in April and a singles medal event in September. This year, the September meeting was held at Tenby on September 27 and again we were lucky with the weather.
Twenty-six members played and the gross champion winner was Celia Bartlett (Newport Links), with Heather Morgan (Tenby) runner-up. The best nett champion was Gillian Roberts (Tenby), who also won the Veterans' Trophy.
