Next week, the golf season ends on a high for local junior golfer Sam Morgan when he represents Wales Schools under 18s against England Schools at Gay Hill Golf Club, Birmingham. Sam has had a busy season, not only in junior tournaments, but also in prestigious men's events throughout Wales. He is pictured holding the Dyfed Men's best nett cup and came joint second in the overall championship. He finished 18th in the St. David's Gold Cross at Royal St. David's Golf Club, Harlech, being one of only two juniors in the top 20. This season he has also seen his handicap reduce from 3.3 to 1.0 thanks to a recent 67, winning the August monthly medal at Tenby. Sam has been contacted by a number of American universities who are interested in his achievements and his ambition is to win a golf scholarship to study in the States. With his recent AS results of 2A's and 2B's, he is well on the way to achieving his goals.
Good scoring in Usher Cup
Thirty-two players entered the Usher Cup competition on a rather dull, windy, cold afternoon, but even so the scores were good, with Alan and Irene Bridges scoring 37 points to win the cup and vouchers in the pro shop. Congratulations to the two of them. Everyone enjoyed a very nice meal in the clubhouse after the game. Results were: 1. Alan and Irene Bridges 37 pts. (Usher Cup and £12 each); 2. Sue Griffiths and John Hancock 36 (£8 each); 3. Paul and Rosina Jenkins 36 (£4 each). Winner of the twos were Alan and Irene Bridges (£8 each). Bag draw: Gillian Roberts and Alan Morton (£8 each). The mixed competitions this year finish with a friendly foursomes on September 14. Please put your names down; there will be a draw for partners.
Club report
MONTHLY MEDAL
There was certainly a heady mixture of highs and lows in the recent August monthly medal at Tenby Golf Club. Among the highs was a hole-in-one by left-hander Peter Brown. The delighted 10-handicapper recorded his ace on the short ninth hole and duly obliged with a traditional 'round' back at the clubhouse. His net 77 was well down the field, however, as another high - or should that be low? - came in the form of a superb round from young Samuel Morgan, who returned a gross 67, nett 65. That was six shots better than his nearest rival, another two-handicapper Matthew Moseley, and comfortably secured him the division one medal. Continuing the highlights, the score of 65 was matched by two other players in division two, but David Henry, playing off 25, pocketed the medal thanks to a better back nine than 18-handicapper Ceiran Slyne. Simon Keating was not far behind with a 66, while four other players also broke 70. Another on a high, for 16 holes at least, was Mark Edwards, who was well in the frame until the par three 17th, when disaster struck, a la Angel Cabrera, and a near double-figure score saw him slip down the leaderboard. He still managed to record a respectable nett 70 (along with a handicap cut), but the 17th - supposedly the easiest hole on the course - has been the undoing of many a good card over the years. And no doubt it will continue so in the future. Among other lows, meanwhile, was the fact that of the 103 players who took part (42 in division one and 61 in division two), no fewer than 38 players produced no returns, as the punishing rough on Tenby links again took its toll. Avoiding the long grass to return the leading scores in the two divisions, though, were: Division one: Samuel Morgan 67-2-65 (medal plus £35.60); Mathew Moseley 73-2-71, last six (£26.70); Ralph Johns 83-12-71 (£17.80); Huw Roberts 84-12-72 (£8.90). Division two: David Henry 90-25-65, last nine (medal plus £35.60); Ceiran Slyne 83-18-65 (£26.70); Simon Keating 85-19-66 (£17.80); Philip Mumford 83-15-68 (£8.90). Hole-in-one: Peter Brown. Twos (£5.47 each): Robin Bradbury, Idwal David, Jack Guerreiro, David Hancock, Alan E. James, Clynt Jones, Meurig Jones, Simon Keating, Gary McNeilly, Tony Morris, Martin Morris, Matthew Moseley, Lyn Owen, Robert Parsons, Tony Ranoe, Phillip Rees, David Webb, Michael Williams. Bag draw (£20 each): G. McNeilly, R. Bradbury, M. Moseley, M. Wainwright, A. Yates.
