Tenby Seniors captain, Newman Vincent, was delighted to achieve a double double last week. A double win against South Pembs. and two away wins in one week, the other being achieved at Newport on Monday. However, he still could not gain a win for himself, being beaten at South Pembs. on Thursday by his ex-colleague Mike Williams partnered by ex- professional, J. Boyd. He claims that he was treated to an exhibition of golf as it should be played and could only stand back and admire. Everyone enjoyed the second game in bright sunshine on a well-manicured course that had its fair share of rough to devour balls. Maurice Lewis and Owen Monaghan had also found their own share of sunshine turning up with glowing red bodies, one of which was the result of falling asleep in the sun - isn't that right Maurice? South Pembs. could only field nine pairs and conceded the result by the odd game. One more pair and (who knows?) they might have achieved an honourable half. Clifton John was still to be seen clutching his Callaway ball! He'll have to introduce it to his club- head one day, if only for the one hit. Brian Morgan was seen hiding in the shadows of the clubhouse afterwards and it was nothing to do with his game, which he and Jack Hasdell had won, but more to do with not sporting his club tie. I don't think Newman noticed. Results: N. Vincent and A. Yates lost to M. Williams and J. Boyd 5 and 4; J. Hancock and M. Arlott lost to J. George and H. James 3 and 2; O. Monaghan and J. Williams lost to D. Evans and P. Daniels 7 and 5; J. Cook and T. Ranoe beat G Thomas and M. Leighs 2 and 1; G. Aston and K. Gouldsbrough beat D. Goodridge and H. Daniels 2 and 1; D. Evans and C. John beat F. Harries and J. McHale 3 and 2; J. Hasdell and B. Morgan beat B. Williams and S. Harries 5 and 4; D. Stone and D. Bath beat E. Pennington and M. Smith 1 hole; M. Lewis and B. Waters lost to D. Wright and T. Pearse 2 and 1. Tenby 5 South Pembs. 4.
Seniors' Section - Hot and cold
For those last in off the course at Newport on Monday the showers were refreshingly cold, which, perhaps, was just as well since the match was played in very warm June sunshine. The weather certainly loosened everyone up and helped Tenby Seniors to an away win. Four games were halved and four were won, leaving two hapless pairs to report to Newman that they had failed to gain a point. As Newman, out with Malcolm Arlott, was one of those to lose, Geoff Aston and Des Stone did not feel too bad when they reported in as the other losing pair. Conceding 11 and 12 shots, respectively, to Ralph Nicholas and Morys Rhys was one too many for the visiting pair as they needed a win on the 18th to halve the match. Morys played the hole well and claimed the victory. The only comfort Newman had was to win a ball in the raffle. Perhaps he should have given that to Brian Morgan since he hit his, Brian's ball that is, as they by-passed each other on the course. Brian, out with Roy Gundry, managed an honourable half in their close encounter against Ian Peters and Gareth Thomas. We don't believe that Roy, as he said, "played like a plonker" -he's too good a golfer to not share in the honours! Bob Howse was trying out a new, expensive, driver which worked well. It's a pity he doesn't try a different putter to complete his game. Nevertheless, Derek Bath supported him well as they returned an honourable half against the steady Cyril Smith and Barry Onions. They found themselves three down with three to play following seven consecutive halved holes. A birdie putt on the 18th earned them the half. Colin Griffith and David Morgan were up against Phil Davies, a veteran of the North African campaign, and found themselves three down after 14 holes and had to win the next three holes in order to force a half. Bart Youll's silver lining or run of good fortune enabled him, aided and abetted by Hywel Probert, to complete the final game to be halved. On the plus side, Paul Bradley proceeded to burn up the course as he enjoyed the open course and the company of Vince Shaw, a player whose game he knows quite well. They were three up with four to play and must have thought that the game was won. Rhydian Smith and Tony Bailey soon brought them to their senses, winning the next two holes and taking the game to the 18th. Paul and Vince were pleased to walk off the course with a one-hole victory. Jack Hasdell, despite a niggling neck injury, and Brian Waters finished their game early winning by five holes with three to play, in a game where many balls were lost and found (they must have thought that they were playing on Tenby!). David Williams and Jeremy George found them too hot to handle. John Williams and David Evans also had a fairly easy afternoon with a six and four victory, mainly because one of their opponents had to retire early. Glen Evans was feeling unwell and had to leave the course, giving Geoff Lewis the unenviable task of playing these two 'golfing giants' on his own. Even with the shots he had as a result of his 28 handicap, he couldn't keep up with them as they amused themselves by trying to outdrive each other. The last victory went to Clifton John and Ken Gouldsbrough, who were playing Barry Rutherford and Howell Williams. This one also went to the 18th as it was a narrow one-hole victory. Before they tee-ed off, Clifton was seen proudly walking around with a Callaway ball, one of two he had found on the championship course at the Vale of Glamorgan. He was still clutching it at the end, having decided not to introduce it to his club on this occasion - just as well, since he lost three balls on his way round. N. Vincent and M. Arlott lost to G. Evans and R. Phillips 5 and 3; V. Shawand P. Bradley beat R. Smith and T. Bailey 1 hole; R. Gundry and B. Morgan halved with I. Peters and G. Thomas; B. Howse and D. Bath halved with C. Smith and B. Onions; B. Youll and H. Probert halved with M. Jack and A. Smith; G. Aston and D. Stone lost to R. Nicholas and M. Rhys 1 hole; K. Gouldsbrough and C. John beat B. Rutherford and H. Williams 1 hole; J. Williams and D. Evans beat G. Evans and G. Lewis 6 and 4; J. Hasdell and B. Waters beat D. Williams and J. George 5 and 3; C. Griffith and D. Morgan halved with P. Davies and H. Rowley. Tenby 6 Newport 4.
