For those of us who walk around Tenby on a Friday night, you will know that there are many of our young people out on the streets hanging around until quite late, with no safe place to go and socialise with their friends. This quite often leads to reports of anti-social behaviour.
The De Valence Pavilion held a taster activity session for under 18s in the summer which proved hugely successful, not just for the participants and the venue, but underage drinking and anti-social behaviour incidents which were dramatically reduced that evening.
The Tenby Friday Night project aims to carry on that good work by providing high profile events monthly on a Friday evening from December through to March 2010 for under 18s.
These events will give the young people in the community the opportunity to work closely with partners to understand the outcomes of underage drinking and how they can take responsibility for their own actions, hopefully leading on to a wider improvement within their community.
One of the aims is for young people in the area to become involved by setting up a committee to research ideas and funding streams to enable the project to carry on past the end date of March 2010.
To help with this, the organisers have enlisted the help of Anthony Harris, Tenby Youth Centre, Tenby Neighbourhood Policing Team, Victoria Smathers, De Valence, and the experience of the Young Persons Support Workers for Pembrokeshire.
"We are hoping the initial costs will come from the Community Cash Back Fund," said a spokeperson.
"To do this, we need local people to log onto the Criminal Justice Site on the internet and go to Community Cash Back for Dyfed Powys and have your say on this idea.
"Please support this bid as without your help we will not be able to progress this idea."
