HUNDLETON U13s 1

TENBY U13s 5

The Tenby and Saundersfoot Lions sponsored Tenby Under 13s encountered a strong and resilient Hundleton side with a few good additions to their squad from last year. The game had a scrappy start, with Hundleton electing to play at times with six men in defence.

Tenby eventually broke them down on 18 minutes with a brilliant footballing move. David Saunders cleared the ball out of defence up to Ashley Prior who delightfully, with one touch, controlled it and laid it on for Matthew Fleming to run on to, and beating two defenders, he superbly floated the ball into the net over the head of the advancing 'keeper.

This was the shot in the arm that Tenby needed, and they started to string a few one-touch passes together. Shots rained in on the home goalie from Fleming, Prior, and then Fleming again after he had created an opening, beating his marker through sheer speed.

Hundleton launched two counter-attacks which were thwarted on both occasions by Damian Walters who was outstanding in the Tenby goal, but also a warning to Tenby's defence for pushing up too far, leaving only Ieuan Rowell and Saunders to deal with the break, and leaving themselves exposed at the back.

Tenby's second goal came when Oliver Morgan caught the home defence napping when he took an opportunist shot from the edge of the box that bounced past the bemused Hundleton 'keeper.

Morgan scored Tenby's third two minutes into the second-half when Jack Lawrence lobbed the ball into the box for him to run on to and fire into the net.

Rowell came off for Ben Messenger on 50 minutes and Jamie Robinson pushed forward into midfield to add weight to the attack. Matthew Jones, Fleming and Robinson all came close with long range shots.

Hundleton never gave up the fight and still came at Tenby, always looking capable of pulling the score back.

Tenby held on and created goal number four when Morgan played the ball out to Prior who was now playing on the left. He ran threequarters the length of the pitch, turned his chasing marker and delightfully chipped the 'keeper.

Again Hundleton came back at Tenby and they pushed everyone forward. The ball ran on to the home centre-forward who was brought down in the box by Saunders and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty to the homesters. They scored from this, but the ref. ordered it to be re-taken because players from both teams had encroached in the box before it was taken. Walters, in the Tenby goal, read the second penalty superbly and dived to his left to pull off a stunning save.

David Saunders made amends for giving away the penalty with a fine run and shot that brought an equally fine save from the home goalie.

Prior scored Tenby's fifth goal with a shot from wide left, and he hit the bar two minutes later with David Jones latching on to the rebound, but unfortunately his shot hit the side netting.

Well done boys for another hard-fought victory. Thanks to the parents for their support, and to Keith Saunders for running the line superbly, as well as running a babysitting service!

Tenby team: Damian Walters, Ieuan Rowell, David Saunders, Jamie Robinson, Oliver Morgan (capt.), Matthew Fleming, Jack Lawrence, Matthew Jones, Ashley Murdoch, David Jones, Ashley Prior, Ben Messenger.

MONKTON SWIFTS U10s 1 TENBY U10s 12

This was Tenby U10s' first game of the season, but it took them only a couple of minutes to open the scoring, with striker Daryl Mansbridge hitting the net. Within a minute, Lloyd Thomas made it two.

Tenby were playing some good passing football and it was not long before Daryl scored again. Monkton then hit back with a well-taken goal, which Lewis Hodgeson, in the Tenby goal, had no chance of saving,

Tenby hit back straight from the restart, with Daryl getting his hat-trick; then just before the half-time whistle Lloyd made it five.

The second half was all one-way traffic, with the Tenby defence of Brad Jenkins, Lewis Davies and Henry Lawrence, captain for this game, all defending near the halfway line, and the midfield of Ianto Griffiths and Sam Ormond both scoring goals, with Tom Nicholas, Joe Richards and Alex Harley all coming on as substitutes and giving good performances. Tom also got on the scoresheet, with Lloyd and Daryl getting two each in the second half.

Great game boys! Reme was well pleased.

Also thanks to parents for transport and support.

TENBY U10s 5 HUNDLETON 0

Tenby U10s started this second game of the season as they finished the first, full of running and passing. The defence was excellent again, with Brad Jenkins (captain for this game), Lewis Davies and Henry Lawrence giving goalie Lewis Hodgeson very little to do.

The midfield trio of Ianto Griffiths, Lloyd Thomas and Sam Ormond took control early in the game and kept Hundleton on the back foot. Lone strike Daryl Mansbridge caused their defence a lot of problems and scored two good goals, with Lloyd Thomas adding another two and Brad showing he is not just a defender by moving up field and scoring one himself.

Billy Davies came on for Sam and made some great runs down the right wing; Rhys Houston replaced Lewis Davies and gave a good performance for his first game, as did David Thomas who took over from Ianto.

An excellent game and a great result, well done boys. Reme was smiling at the end. Thanks to the parents for their support.

HAVERFORDWEST LADIES 1

TENBY LADIES 4

Tenby Ladies made a fantastic start to the season when they beat last season's double winners Haverfordwest. This was the club's first ever win over the side, so a small piece of history was made!

With pitches unavailable on Sunday, the Tenby side made an exciting trip to Bridge Meadow on Monday night, where most of the team were to experience playing on the excellent League of Wales pitch under floodlights for the first time.

With a well-thought out game plan, Tenby took the game to Haverfordwest from the first whistle. It was good to see Speedy return to the side after a short absence and within a few minutes she showed her prowess with a strong run through up front.

Carrie Slack had a Herculean task, marking Welsh U19 international Laura Roberts. Slack, herself an U15 Welsh player, stuck to her task well, snaffling any chances Roberts tried, and still had the energy to create havoc with her midfield runs. This truly was an excellent performance from such a young player.

With Haverfordwest's main threat kept out of the game for long periods, it was up to the rest of the team to play just as well, and they did. This was an incredible team performance, with the side well led by captain and goalkeeper Denise Powell.

With her safe hands and the attitude, skill and determination of the team, it was not long before Tenby would score. A ball was played out from defence to Speedy, who, with great vision, laid it into space for Tenby's other international, Nicola Aston to run onto. Aston controlled the ball well, ran with it and confidently slotted it home, to the delight of the visiting team and crowd.

Tenby had several chances to score again, but Haverfordwest equalised against the run of play after players were unmarked at a corner.

Tenby, however, sensed that this was their day and after a dazzling run by Michaela Bevan on the left, the ball was played into the box where Cally Roberts bravely went up for it. Although clashing with a defender, Roberts was strong enough to direct the ball towards the goal to make it 2-1 to Tenby at half-time.

Haverfordwest threw everything into the second half, but Tenby's defence stood firm. Sally James and Imelde Rossi were outstanding in central defence and were well supported by the versatile Hazel Sawyer at left back and Angela Nicholls on the right. Ani Nicholls chased well in midfield, having to cover a wide area with Carrie man to man marking Roberts.

Haverfordwest tried several different combinations, but the Tenby players consumed any attack.

Tenby went further ahead when Roberts got an amazing touch to an Aston cross after she had convincingly beaten several defenders.

Then the side went further ahead after some excellent running by Bevan who put over a superb ground ball that had Aston stretching as the far post to tap the ball in for an incredible fourth goal.

By now the team were ecstatic, but still had the composure to thwart anything that Haverfordwest could throw at them, but it was a relief to hear the final whistle.

Team: Denise Powell, Sally James, Imelde Rossi, Angela Nicholls, Hazel Sawyer, Ani Nicholls, Carrie Slack, Michaela Bevan, Nicola Aston, Speedy, Cally Roberts.

TENBY U9s 9 HUNDLETON U9s 0

Tenby Under 9s had an excellent win over Hundleton last Saturday at the Clicketts. The game was played in a good spirit and both sides displayed their skills with bags of determination.

Jake, Greg and Cairan cleared any danger that threatened the Tenby goal and George, Philip and Daniel worked tirelessly in midfield. Up front, Ashley and Curtis were a constant threat to the Hundleton defence, while Alex, Oliver and Aled replaced the tired legs.

In the second half, Robert went between the Tenby sticks, giving Jake a chance to show his skills in the outfield.

However, the young Seasiders were the stronger side and scored goals from Curtis Hurlow (4), Cairan Broomhead (2), Daniel Edwards, Philip Horsley and Ashley Smith.

Tenby squad: J. Roberts, G. Lees-Griffiths, C. Broomhead, G. Collins, P. Horsley, D. Edwards, C. Hurlow, Ashley Smith, A. Heesom, Aled Smith, O. Worley, R. Fairlie.

PENNAR ROBINS U16s 1 TENBY U16s 8

The Lewis and Lewis Solicitors sponsored Tenby Under 16s opened up the 2001-2002 season with a good win at Pennar. Playing against a slight wind, the Seasiders immediately put the home side under pressure, but were unable to convert any of their chances early on.

The Robins then took the lead against the run of play when, with their first sortie into the Tenby half, a defensive error let in their striker who made no mistake from short range.

It was only a matter of time before the visitors would get back on level terms and a good cross from Perry Broadhurst found the unmarked Tom Page to fire home. This seemed to open the flood gates and Tenby added a further seven goals before the interval. Page collected his hat-trick, as did fellow striker Jack Christopher, with the remaining goals coming from Mathew Birch and a David Day penalty.

The second half turned into an anti-climax, with neither side scoring, with the best chance coming from Day, the Tenby captain, who rattled the crossbar.

Tenby tried their hardest to find the back of the net from umpteen chances and Pennar tried equally as hard not to concede any more goals.

Broadhurst, Owain Evans and Scott Smith turned in good performances for the Seasiders, in a match which also saw Mike Davis making his debut.

This was a good win for Tenby with three valuable points. But they will have to reduce the number of mistakes and capitalise on the chances created in front of goal to have any thought of honours this year.

Tenby fielded: L. Hurlow, T. Hilling, D. Day, O. Evans, S. Hilling, P. Broadhurst, S. Smith, M. Beare, D. Otton, J. Christopher, T. Page, M. Davis, L. Robson.
