Tenby Under 16s 2

Camrose Under 16s 1

Tenby Under 16s, sponsored by Willow Carpentry, have reached the final of the West Wales Youth Cup after beating local rivals Camrose, at Monkton. They are the first Tenby side to reach this final in the history of the competition and will meet Swansea based team Treboeth Claret at Llanelli's Stebonheath Park on Saturday, May 2.

Tenby started the brighter and had several good chances to open their account. Will Thomas had two shots well saved and Ashley Smith was just wide with another. Declan Carroll, who along with Ashley Andrews were outstanding in midfield, kept the pressure on the Camrose defence with some lovely through balls, but their 'keeper was in fine form.

As the half wore on, Camrose created a few chances themselves, but Patrick Elliott, Alex Heesom, Dan Edwards and captain Curtis Hurlow gelled well as a unit and cleared the danger.

The match remained 0-0 midway into the second half and then exploded with a flurry of goals. Ashley Smith sent Thomas scurrying down the left flank and passed his defender and hit a low shot which beat the outstretched Camrose 'keeper and into the net via the far post.

Five minutes later, Greg Lees-Griffiths robbed the ball on the halfway line and fed Carroll, who lifted the ball over the covering defence, allowing Thomas to nip through and deftly lob the advancing Camrose 'keeper to make it two-nil.

With less than 10 minutes left on the clock, Tenby only had to see the game out. However, a mix-up between Hurlow and his 'keeper, Jake Roberts, saw the burly Camrose striker slide in to toe-poke the ball home to set up a tense finish.

Camrose then hit the post from a corner, before Roberts pulled off a tremendous save to keep his side in front.

The resultant clearance, from Roberts, was headed on by Gareth Warlow to Andrews, whose shot hit the crossbar. Referee David Badger blew for full-time, much to the delight of the Tenby players and supporters.

Camrose U12s 2 Tenby U12s 4

Tenby laboured to maintain their unbeaten record in their penultimate game in the Pembrokeshire U12s league this week.

Having already won the league, and missing one or two key players, the Tenby boys struggled to move out of second gear in the first half, and almost paid the price after an inspired performance from a much-improved Camrose side.

Strong pressure and good passing from Tenby led to several corners. But without a regular centre forward they were unable to capitalise on their approach play and turn possession into goals.

Facing a well organised home defence, the Seasiders were also thwarted by several tight offside decisions. Midway through the first half, Lloyd Hughes was finally put through on goal, only to see a decent shot stopped by a great save.

As half-time approached, a frustrated Tenby frontline increasingly tried to run the ball through the defence, and Camrose began to win more possession. Tenby's wing backs, Tom Harries and Luke Hartland, pushed up well to support the midfield, but with gaps left at the back, the visitors began to get caught on the break.

Tenby 'keeper, Daniel Evans, reacted quickly to pick up a couple of speculative through balls from the home side. But then a moment of uncertainty in the heart of the Tenby defence let Camrose in for a surprise goal.

Tenby equalised with a timely flash of brillance from Spencer Williams, whose rapid turn and 20-yard shot dipped over the 'keeper.

In the second-half, Will Davies was replaced up front by Jake Morgan. Tenby picked up the pace and started to look much more dangerous in the final third. Sam Perret side-stepped a defender to make space for a right foot shot across the face of goal, which floated just past the far post.

Moments later the right midfielder put Tenby into the lead, after a shot from Scott Ferney was palmed away. Soon after, Scott Ferney and Adam John both went close.

But just as Tenby looked certain to extend their lead, Camrose equalised with a fanstastic shot after a free-kick had been cleared.

Camrose also had a shout for a penalty, after a last-ditch challenge by Owen Coombs, but the referee waved play on. The Tenby sweeper later picked up a nose bleed from a stray arm, but, undaunted, he outclassed the Camrose attack in the closing stages, with a series of strong tackles and polished passes.

Adam Muskett in the centre of defence also finished the game much more strongly. And Tenby finally sprung into life with the ever-tenacious Adam John linking play together in midfield.

A beautifully timed pass from Sam Perret put in Scott Ferney who curled a classy low shot beyond the diving 'keeper to put Tenby back into the lead.

As Camrose pushed forward, Tenby took advantage with another quick break. And Scott Ferney clinched victory with his second goal - confidently taking the ball around the 'keeper and side-footing into the empty net to make the final score 4-2.

The Tenby boys should be appplauded for fighting back from a goal down and securing yet another win. But if they want to finish the season unbeaten, they will need to dramatically up their work rate in the cup games ahead.

Thanks as ever to all the supporters who made the trip to Camrose, the match referee, and the U12s kit sponsor, Park Road Fish and Chips.
