HAVERFORDWEST

TENBY LADIES 0

Tenby visited Haverfordwest for their fourth encounter this season, hopeful of getting at last a point based on the closeness of the results of the previous matches.

Facing a strong wind, Tenby found it hard to contain the mobile home forwards early on, but the back four of Angela Nicholls, Sally James, Imelde Rossi and Hazel Sawyer gave enough cover in defence to allow Denise Powell to save any shots with her usual confidence.

Haverfordwest, with the more powerful midfield players, had most of the ball in the centre-circle, but Angharad Nicholls and Carrie Slack did just enough to put the home team out of their stride, to prevent any real threat developing.

Cally Roberts and Salina Morgan tried hard at the front, and with Michaela Bevan working deep on the left to help Hazel Sawyer deal with a fast right winger, they were often heavily outnumbered when it came to testing the Haverfordwest goalkeeper.

On the half-hour the home team went 1-0 ahead when a right wing cross eluded the whole Tenby defence and the Haverfordwest left-winger shot in from close range.

This seemed to shake the confidence of Tenby, and they went further behind when a 20-yard shot, through a crowd of players, skidded past Denise Powell into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal.

Haverfordwest, sensing a big score, threw several players forward, but with everyone working hard, and with Carrie Slack and Nicola Aston getting well into the game, Tenby came off at half-time looking for better things in the second-half.

Right from the start, Tenby kept possession of the ball for longer and the right wing moves of Nicola Aston and Carrie Slack showed class every time they touched the ball. Michaela Bevan, Salina Morgan and Hazel Sawyer, in a re-arranged left flank, were very solid in the second-half and Haverfordwest pressed forward with the main aim of getting Laura Roberts into the penalty area through the middle of the Tenby defence. Imelde Rossi did a good job in containing her, and Sally James defended well, making several saving tackles.

When they got possession near to goal, Tenby just lacked the time and the composure to make the final pass count, but they made Haverfordwest work hard to keep a clean sheet, although Cally Roberts and Nicola Aston came very close at times.

Kate Allen replaced Angharad Nicholls in the midfield and was quickly into the game, helping to force the home team backwards and weaken their desire to attack their opponents.

Tenby again had given a very good overall team performance through their organisation, but a five-minute lapse and lack of any real power through the middle saw them end up without a point from the match.

Tenby squad: Denise Powell, Angela Nicholls, Sally James, Imelde Rossi, Hazel Sawyer, Nicola Aston, Carrie Slack, Angharad Nicholls, Michaela Bevan, Cally Roberts, Salina Morgan, Kate Allen.

GOWERTON U11s 2

Tenby attacked against a strong wind in the early stages, with Gavin Kinsey prominent on the left. The Gowerton goalkeeper was in early action diving to block a close range shot and then reaching up to touch a rising shot from Guto Griffiths over the crossbar.

When it was Gowerton's turn to make something out of their limited ball possession they went into a surprise lead with a close range shot following a corner.

Tenby sprung back in positive manner when a passing move involving Gavin Kinsey and Griffiths found Joe Allen, who beat his marker to level the scores with a low shot.

Looking happier with the 1-1 scoreline, Tenby were competing with some skilful opponents to try and take the lead, but they fell behind again, when Richard Thomas, so far almost unemployed in the Tenby goal, let the ball slip and a Gowerton forward eagerly snapped up the chance to put his team 2-1 in the lead.

Not letting this setback worry them, Tenby continued to attack regularly, and after several good saves by the visiting goalkeeper, Jordan Lloyd put the home team back in the game at 2-2 with a good goal.

With the wind behind them in the second half, Tenby impressed with their positive attacking play, and good defensive cover from Jamie Robins and Scott Helmich kept some dangerous Gowerton forwards at bay when the counter-attacked.

Tenby got in front at 3-2 when constant pressure on the Gowerton goal kept their goalkeeper very busy until he missed his kick to allow a shot from Joe Allen to creep in and put Tenby 3-2 in the lead.

This lapse by Gowerton seemed to discourage their players and Tenby swept forward making numerous chances from crosseds by Sam Christopher, only to see them blocked desperately on the goal-line.

A couple of dangerous breaks by the skilful Gowerton strickers were dealt with by last ditch tackles from Richard Thomas, coming quickly from the goal, and Scott Helmich and Jamie Robins, the latter excelling himself by heading off the goal-line when a goal by the visitors looked certain.

This was the turning point in the game and Sam Christopher scored after running on to a good through ball.

Taking a different line of approach, Aaron Goldsmith tried his luck from 20 yards to score with an amazing lob to put Tenby 5-2 in front.

Jordan Lloyd and Gavin Kinsey tormented the visiting defence with a series of low crosses to supply Sam Christopher who came close and then Jordan Lloyd for a further goal, before Joe Allen completed the scoring to give Tenby an impressive 7-2 win.

This was an excellent match and both teams gave everything to make for some exciting goalmouth action, and good mid-field passing movements.

Tenby squad: Richard Thomas, Jamie Robins, Scott Helmich, Jordan Lloyd, Aaron Goldsmith, Joe Allen, Gavin Kinsey, Sam Christopher, Guto Griffiths.

Thanks to Dene Hurlow for refereeing the game.

The previous week, Tenby had played host to Woodley Saints, a visiting side from Reading. This proved to be a match played in good spirits, although the Tenby side proved to be too strong, running out 8-0 winners.

Well done to all those who played in that match.

Over the Easter holidays, Tenby's up-and-coming Under 9s team met a visiting side from Swansea. Although the match was played in poor weather conditions, both sides produced some entertaining football, but the Tenby boys proved too good for their opposition.

Tenby took the lead after an individual run by Lloyd Thomas on the right flank. He cut in well and made no mistake in firing the ball into the back of the net, leaving the visitors' 'keeper with no chance.

Thomas Nicholas scored Tenby's second after a good pass from the right and then Lloyd scored his second soon afterwards straight from a corner.

Lewis Hodgson kept a clean sheet in the Tenby goal and had very little to do all game. Cerith Messenger and Alex Harley were in complete control of the defence and thwarted any attacks by the opposition. Harley's composure and balls from defence set up many of the Tenby's attacks.

Rhys Heesom and Henry Lawrence took care of the midfield where Lawrence's reading of the match meant that he cut off any supply of ball to the Swansea forwards.

Sam Ormond was impressive with his speed and skill up front and he was well supported by Brad MacDermott-Jenkins, who played one of his best games so far.

Ianto Griffiths was rewarded for all his efforts on the left wing when his alertness and speed, after a poor goal kick from the opposing 'keeper, saw him first to the ball to slot home a simple goal.

All the boys played well in the wet and cold conditions and the large number of supporters were relieved to hear the final whistle!

Squad: Lewis Hodgson, Alex Harley, Henry Lawrence, Cerith Messenger, Sam Ormond, Rhys Heesom, Thomas Nicholas, Lloyd Thomas, Ianto Griffiths, Brad MacDermott-Jenkins.

Thanks to Remi for refereeing and to all the supporters for their support.

ST. CLEARS U14s 8

To say this was the biggest disappointment of the season would be an understatement. Games in the past between these two sides have been close and keenly fought. Admittingly St. Clears are still in the race for the runners-up spot and Tenby are safely in mid-table, but that doesn't account for players lack of commitment or determination.

The first half was pretty even, with St. Clears grabbing a goal as early as the fifth minute. However, the Hillings sponsored Seasiders fought back and created several chances for themselves. Captain for the day Dan Cope was instrumental in most moves and linked well with David Otton and Perry Broadhurst.

Tenby did well to contain the six-foot plus figure of Iain Wray who was outstanding in the St. Clears attack.

The last kick of the first half saw the visitors snatch a second goal which was a cruel blow to Tenby after all their hard work they had put in.

The second half was in complete contrast to the first and St. Clears almost scored at will, with the impressive Wray securing a hat-trick.

Thanks must go to Angela Nicholls for controlling the match so well.

For Tenby it was a sad end to a mediocre season. However, they must now focus towards the Tenby Sevens Tournament and two friendlies against Mold Alex FC, North Wales, and Seaton FC, Leicester, in the coming weeks.

Tenby squad: L. Hurlow, D. Rowell, D. Taylor, O. Evans, M. Beare, D. Otton, P. Broadhurst, D. Cope, M. Birch, L. Robson, C. Adams, C. Allen, N. Davies, T. James.
