At the beginning of the month, four members of the club - Jan Griffiths, Barbara Hart, Angie Hicks and Wendy Bell - travelled to Hereford to join arrangers from across the Three Counties and South Wales to take part in the Cathedral Flower Festival, 'The Earth Turns'. The arrangements in the cathedral crypt were dedicated to WWI, and Tenby had been allocated a place there to do an arrangement depicting the trench warfare. Working on a low four-foot circular dish, they chose as their theme 'The fields became battlefields, lives were lost, and now they lie in Flanders fields.' A floral trench was centre of the design, on one side was a meadow, on the other a field of wheat and poppies, with an area of devastation between each. The latter was achieved with small areas of turf and earth. To add to the display, miniature helmets and sandbags, broken tree branches, and flower heads representing explosions were used. To complete the design, a purple poppy was placed to remember all the horses and other animals that gave their lives, and an arrangement of white roses for peace. The arrangement had been done on a moss base to give the impression of the fields. All the club members had been involved with the design from the start, and visited Hereford on the final day of the festival to see not only the Tenby display, but to enjoy the hundreds of magnificent arrangements that filled the cathedral. They were delighted to learn that the club arrangement had been much admired, and that many visitors had admitted to being close to tears as they had found it so poignant. The club meets on the third Monday of every month at New Hedges Village Hall, at 2 pm. They welcome new members, and can guarantee an afternoon of learning a new skill, or doing what they enjoy, with friendship and fun.
