Members of the Cymrodorion Society enjoyed an artistic feast on Thursday, November 20. The speaker for the afternoon was Mr. Michael Francis, from the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, who, through a series of magnificent and well-chosen slides, guided the audience through the history of art, concentrating on views and places in Pembrokeshire.

Mr. Francis's expertise and knowledge of the subject was very evident and his interesting commentary on the pictures and about the artists, some extremely famous, made the afternoon instructive as well as entertaining.

Mr. Francis referred frequently to the wealth of art work which is in the possession of the National Library and reminded everyone that pictures provide historical factual information on buildings, such as castles and churches, and the cathedral at St. Davids, as well as villages and towns. Equally important is the information they give about transport, customs and the fashion of the times.

Mr. Francis concluded his presentation with a selection of slides of pictures of Tenby. These were magnificent and of great interest.. He reminded members, too, that they should all take advantage of the facilities the National Library has to offer and invited them to view the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition currently on show to the public. All were interested to hear of the many famous people Mr. Francis had met in his work and especially the several occasions he had spent with the late Mr. Kyffin Williams and of the treasures he had left to the National Library.

Mr. John Beynon, in his vote of thanks in Welsh, emphasised what a privilege it had been to have enjoyed access to the slides of art work through the person of Mr. Francis. He paid tribute to the role he had played in building up folios of art work within the Library and the enormous help he had so willingly given to Tenby Museum over the years.

After enjoying a cup of tea, members took advantage to speak informally to Mr. Francis.

Mrs. Trevena Vincent thanked members for attending and invited them to the next meeting on Thursday, December 11, when fellow members would present a programme of readings and songs for Christmas.
