Last week, a team from Tenby Sea Cadets competed in the power boat handling Welsh championships at Port Talbot. The crews were set a 30-minute time limit to demonstrate man overboard procedure, towing another craft, coming alongside other boats and the pontoon, completing a 360-degree turn in a confined space and then the difficult task of going astern and mooring the boat between two buoys. The Tenby team of O/C. J. Crowney, O/C. L. Berridge, coxswain and L/C. L. Richards were pleased to be awarded third place in the championships. The Tenby rowing crew of G. Dabbs, S. James, E. Whitfield, M. Starr, D. Crocksford and coxswain D. Matthews were also competing at Port Talbot. This was the young crew's first competition and they did extremely well to be placed third against senior teams, only being beaten by half a boat length. Next week Tenby cadets compete in the Welsh district sailing regatta, again at Port Talbot. Tenby Sea Cadets then have the next busy period when they assist the Seafarers Charity Evening at Uzmaston, Haverfordwest. Today (Friday), the Commanding Officer and a group of cadets will be travelling to Cardiff to take part in the Armed Forces Day parade through the city. The officer taking the salute will be the First Sea Lord Admiral Sir George Zambellas KCB DSC ADC DL. After the parade, the cadets will be able to see the displays by the Royal Signals White Helmets motorcycle display team, Sea Cadets' field guns competition and the Western Front Association's version of War Horse from World War I. The next day, after returning from Cardiff, the Tenby Unit will be parading for Tenby Mayor's civic parade. The cadets will then have a couple of weeks rest before they take part in the Pembroke Dock bicentenary parade. The senior cadets are busy preparing for their offshore sail training cruises on TS Royalist when they will be sailing from Holyhead through the Irish Sea to finish in Milford Haven. The Tenby Unit is still looking for adult volunteers to assist the present staff with supervision and safety coverage for all the various activities.
