This, Tenby Bowling Club's 12th Open Three-Wood Pairs Tournament, sponsored continuously by Texaco Ltd., (Pembroke),was as popular as ever with the Welsh bowling fraternity. Last Saturday, saw the 40 pairs plunge into the frenetic six ends, round-robin stage, which continued until lunch-time on the Sunday. There were the usual crop of upsets which denied some of the more fancied pairs progress to the knock-out stage. With the weather turning decidedly wintery on the Sunday, all pressed on to produce section winners. They were as follows: Section A: winners - D. Thomas and N. Bithray;                              runners-up - A. Howells and D. Llewellyn. Section B: winners - P. Diment and M. Bishop  (winners in 2000); runners-up T. Nutt and P. Carpenter. Section C:  winners - W. Rees and M. Watts  (winners in 2003); runners-up - M. Harries and C. Davies. Section D:   winners -G. Miles and J. Glover; runners-up - R. Hudson and H. Griffiths. The quarter-finals between the section winners and runners-up saw the section winners confirm their superiority and enter the semi-finals. Quarter final results were as follows: D. Thomas and N. Bithray 5 T.Nutt and P Carpenter 2; P. Diment and M. Bishop 7 M. Harries and C. Davies 2; W. Rees and M. Watts 9 R. Hudson and H.Griffiths 2; G. Miles and J. Glover 10 A. Howells and D. Llewellyn 1. The semi-finals were played over eight ends and results were as follows: David Thomas and Nick Bithray (Ammanford) 0  Wyndham Rees and Martin Watts (Brynhyfryd) 12; Paul Diment and Malcolm Bishop  (Saundersfoot) 4 Gilly Miles (Pontardulais) and John Glover (Parc-y-Dre) 10. In the first semi-final, the holders, Wyndham and Martin proved too good for David and Nick, swamping them 12-0. The unexpected demise of the Saundersfoot duo Paul and Malcolm highlighted the skills of Gilly and John whose 10-4 win was impressive. Final: This year's final was one of the finest contests ever seen in the history of the Texaco Trophy. It was played in an atrocious rain-storm, but the bowling skills displayed by both pairs were outstanding. Last year's winners, Wyndham and Martin, retained the trophy by one shot. Club chairman, Jonathan Webb, congratulated the winners and thanked Texaco Ltd., for their continuous and important support, enabling the Tenby Bowling Club to bring pleasure to many. Jonathan also thanked the many bowlers for making the tournament the success that it is. He also thanked the ladies for their excellent catering once again, the bar staff and tournament organisers for job well done. All of the bowlers send their best wishes to Phil Thompson, of Texaco, on his recent marriage to Christine. All hope they have many years of wedded bliss.
