YEAR 2001
The nomination list for next year's management committee will be closed at 6 pm on our last day of the season, Sunday, September 24. We are looking for new blood to invigorate the management with an eye to the future. Wanted are willing new faces to spread the considerable workload throughout the year. The ideal candidates are recently retired members who can offer new ideas and their experience, to keep our magnificent club forging ahead, both on and off the green.
LOCKERS
The men bowlers are requested to vacate their lockers for a short period to allow work to be carried out during October and November.
WORKING PARTY
Weather permitting, the timetable for putting our bowling green to bed for the winter's rest, looks like: Saturday, September 30, large skip arrives early. The hollow tined cores to be barrowed off which will probably take most of the day.
If you are still up to it, Sunday, October 1, reseeding early and five tons of top dressing being applied; this usually takes about two-and-a-half to three hours.
Lots of healthy members of all ages are required for this usually humorous get-together. Bring a shovel and gloves if you have them. There will be plenty of coffee, tea and toast and even the odd pint; the more the merrier.
SUCCESS FOR SAM
Monday evening saw the much awaited final night of the men's triples competition for the Belgrave Shield.
The games were played and the scores added up to reveal the winner to be Sam McNeilly.
The top five places were as follows: 1. S. McNeilly; 2. B. Barnikel; 3. A. Redman; 4. R. Holly; 5. K. Deli.
The top three received trophies and cash, while the fourth and fifth also had cash.
Mr. Malcolm Thomas, owner of the Belgrave Hotel, presented the magnificent shield to Sam.
The evening was rounded off with all players enjoying a meal of curry, rice and chips, kindly provided by the ladies of the club.
FIVE ARCHES LADIES
The Five Arches ladies have had mixed results from their three league games played at home recently.
The team suffered defeat at the hands of Pendine on August 31 when due to the miserable weather conditions, the match, sponsored by Dennis Cafe, had to be curtailed to 14 ends.
Janine Bancroft, Alison Redman, Audrey Owens and Vera Williams drew 11-all with the rink skipped by Doria Howells, but unfortunately Pat Stubbs, Sandra Williams, Val James and Gladys Gray lost 19-6 to Betty Pickersgill's quartet.
It was not long before the Five Arches were back to winning form as on September 11 they romped to a 21-shot win over St. Issell's.
Chris Morgan skipped Rene Silcox, Meryl Cooke and Val James to a 22-19 win over Beryl L. Lewis and company. The Arches had been 22-13 ahead on the 19th end, but a strong finish by the visitors saw them cut the deficit to three.
The overall score, however, was boosted thanks to Pat Stubbs, Alison Redman, Audrey Owens and Vera Williams, who swept to a 34-16 victory over Margaret Robb.
The team were in action again on Saturday when they entertained Neyland in a rearranged game and again there was a good display of bowling on both rinks.
Anna Hubbard, Alison Redman, Audrey Owens and Vera Williams chalked up a 28-12 win over Janet Sutton's rink, while excellent bowling from Sandra Williams and Chris Morgan supported by Pat Stubbs and Ceris Hewlings ensured the Arches returned another winning card, as they finished 11 shots clear of Val Hubbard.
Weather permitting, the Five Arches ladies were due to conclude their season yesterday (Thursday) with a fixture against Pembroke Dock Park. It is hoped that if the squad can pick up maximum points they can finish third in the league.
The Five Arches ladies would like to congratulate the Five Arches men on winning the Pembrokeshire division two championship and they wish them all the best in the first division next year.
WELL DONE JANINE
Pictured is Janine Bancroft who was runner-up in this year's Welsh Women's Bowling Association under 25s singles competition.
Janine beat Kerry Frayling, of Haverfordwest, in the semi-final, but was unfortunately defeated by Joanna Weale, of Llandrindod Wells, in the final.
Both games were played at Bridgend and, although disappointed at coming close to lifting the title, she was pleased to bring the runners-up trophy back to Tenby for the first time.
This achievement has rounded off an excellent season for 20-year-old Janine, who is studying for a history and English degree at Trinity College, as she was also a member of the Welsh team who won the junior international series in July.
