More care and attention should be given to Tenby Bandstand, one of the iconic features of the town - which in recent times has resembled more of a ‘rotten gazebo’, a local councillor stated this week.

Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of Tenby Town Council, Clr. Will Crockford told his colleagues that after several walks around Castle Hill recently, he noticed what a ‘poor state’ the bandstand was in.

“This should be a beacon for Tenby, it’s an iconic feature - but instead it resembles a rotten gazebo. It looks very sad up there,” he stated.

Clr. Crockford said that if the bandstand had been regularly monitored by Pembrokeshire County Council then it probably wouldn’t require the amount of repair work that it is now in need of, before he requested that it be looked at ASAP, with a view to improvements being carried out before the summer season.

He also said that the mural to the side of Tenby Museum was in need of some TLC too, as it was falling apart.

The town clerk, Andrew Davies, said that he didn’t think that any work had been done on the bandstand over the past six or so years.

“I know we can request this work, but it’s not likely to be done by PCC, but they might provide us with the paint we need,” remarked the Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane.

“Marjorie Crockford raised the money for that bandstand, through the Tenby 200 committee, who worked together with the council, so it was her idea to bring it back. That might be just what we need now, some volunteers on board to help with this. Perhaps if we get the materials, then we can get people up there to look at it,” she added.

Clr. Trevor Hallett agreed that the bandstand needed ongoing maintenance to help maintain it.

Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, said that it had been mentioned not so long ago to renovate some of commemorative plaques around the town and up Castle Hill, which seemed to have been forgotten about.

“There seems to be all these pots of funding money that we’re told can be tapped into, but they need to get it done,” she said.

Mr. Davies said that the town’s handyman was also due to carry out some painting duties of the benches along South Parade, once the weather improved.
