Thursday was a mini competition evening, the subject 'Monochrome' which provided members with the opportunity to show off a variety of subject material.
This competition is judged by the club members, each member being allowed a maximum of four images.
In joint second place were Neil Thomas with 'Llanion Quoit' and Roy Packer with 'Light Hands' and the winning image, 'Downhill Racing' by Dave Bolton.
Following a break for tea and coffee, Mike Cullis gave members an insight into the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), which is an educational charity promoting both the art and science of photography.
Mike explained that the distinctions are world recognised. The society was established in 1853 in the pioneering days of photography and in 1894 it became the 'Royal' by decree and more recently in 2004 was presented with a Royal Charter. The society has a priceless collection of photographs and historical items.
Mike went on to explain that to achieve a society distinction the RPS award distinctions on the basis of a portfolio of work which may be still or moving photographic images.
There are three levels - Licentiateship (LRPS), which is normally the entry level and is awarded for a good level of basic skill and competence; Associate (ARPS) is awarded for a high standard of technical competence and individual creative ability of excellence and distinguished ability; Fellowship (FRPS) is awarded for exceptional standards of excellence and distinguished ability. You need to have achieved the ARPS before you can apply for the FRPS.
Mike showed images from the RPS and along with several of his own explained the process of preparing and submitting an application, with advice and suggestions on how to work towards a successful submission.
New members are always welcome at the club, which meets every Thursday, 7.30 pm, at St. Florence Village Community Hall.
Thursday, February 7 - an evening with Andy Beel FRPS, with a talk on marvellous monochrome.
