Last week's meeting at St. Florence Village Hall was a talk with slides by Elizabeth Hilton ARPS, entitled 'Down the Danube in a canoe'. The talk was the tale of Elizabeth and her family's trip down the Danube, from its source in Germany almost the full length of the river to the Black Sea.
Travelling through Germany, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia and into Bulgaria, the family of six paddled their way through Europe in two canoes.
The journey took them three months, and, although they did it during the summer, they encountered all sorts of weather.
Using her slides to illustrate the wonderful scenery, she described the conditions, the camp sites where they pitched their tents, and some of the wonderful people they met along the way.
After a break for refreshments, the journey resumed, and braving chasms, locks and giant barge traffic on the river, the family managed to negotiate their way through drenching weather in Austria, and baking heat in Hungary and Yugoslavia.
As they travelled between the banks, which were Croatia and Serbia on each side of the river, they found great help and support from the extremely poor people of Serbia, in particular.
They met up with holidaying canoeists on the river, made friends who they still see, and with other individuals, who travelled part of the way with them.
Elizabeth entertained her audience with tales of the young members of her family and some of the hardships they had to endure.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the talk and the pictures.
Next week's meeting will be a mini competition when members are invited to bring one digital image on a CD. Also members are invited to tell everyone their tips and tricks in photography.
Everyone is welcome to join the group. For further information, visit http://www.tenby-camera-club.co.uk">www.tenby-camera-club.co.uk.
