Last Friday evening, the Arts Club enjoyed a most interesting, informative and amusing presentation of the history and development of brass instruments with the Welsh Brass Trio.

The leader of the trio, Phil Dando, took members through the history of these instruments, from conch shells and animal horns up to the most modern horns, trumpets and trombones.

The length of the tube or pipe and the progression over many centuries from wood to metal were all demonstrated with appropriate music by the trio.

Later, the invention of valves and slides in the 19th century gave a much greater range of notes and therefore greater scope to the composers of music from there on.

Members of the trio showed what a difference in sound and tone there was between an instrument without a valve and one with valves.

The instrumental ability of each player, their humour and the erudite commentary by Phil Dando made this a most enjoyable evening.

There is no meeting this week. Next week, on November 21, Linda and Edgar Gibbs will be giving their 'Digital Magic Lantern Show' at the usual time of 8 pm in Church House. Non members are welcome at £2. Refreshments will be served.
