Last Friday, members of the Arts Club enjoyed an evening of light entertainment with a performance of a very new version of an old favourite, the tale of Red Riding Hood. This was performed by Arts Club members themselves and produced, directed and generally prompted by Mary Smith. The scene was set by Pauline Allen at the keyboard with seasonal music, which the audience was encouraged to join in. The decor was what might be described as minimalist, but the acting made up for the lack of props! Margaret Hill as 'mother' looked the part and portrayed a caring, anxious parent to perfection. Her daughter, Red Riding Hood, looked charming in a scarlet cloak and hood, her red hair to match and her singing and dancing technique of a very high standard. Doreen Hammersley was just right for the part. The big bad wolf received boos and applause in equal measure for his dastardly behaviour and eventual come-uppance. Nick Hockenhull's wolf was truly pantomime at its most hilarious. He must have been relieved to be rid of the long nose! Lew Day's grandma received much sympathy from the audience, especially for her bloodthirsty end! John Bevan, looking every inch the brave woodman, saved the day for the ladies by wielding his trusty axe, just in time to produce a happy ending! After hearty applause from an appreciative audience and further carols, everyone retired to enjoy delicious refreshments. After the Christmas break, Friday evening meetings will resume on January 11.
