It's with a huge degree of sadness that we begin reporting the club's recent activities again (writes N.A.). Our great friend, vice-chairman and all round top man, Idris Williams, recently passed from here to the better fishing grounds up above. He is sorely missed and will continue to be so.
His funeral was on May 29 and, as you would expect, the boys were on parade and called to account by Linda for the cleanliness of their shoes and general smartness on the day. We all passed we think!
Also, an important mention for Keith, of Tenby Angling, who arranged a guard of honour for Idris before his final journey to Parc Gwyn. It was much appreciated by the family and club members, so thanks Keith!
April 1, Mid Week Match: Only four anglers booked in following the change in the clocks and the resulting loss of darkness.
Results were: 1. Karl Boyle, LSD 0.800 kg; 2. G. P. Thomas, bag 1.232 kg.
April 5, Beach Match and Denning Cup: Ten anglers arrived for a 10.30 trip down Pendine beach in search of flounders and maybe an early season bass. Catches were very localised and, although we all fished in the same general area, and there was a good surf, just eght flounders and one bass were landed.
Results were: 1. Nev Andrews, bass 1.666kg; 2. Steve Cooke, bag 1.400 kg; 3. Barry Taylor, flounder 0.562 kg.
April 12, Dinghy Match: Three boats attempted the first small boat match of the year. As usual, the forecast was all over the place leading up to the match, but on the day, conditions were ideal. The bay was full of small stuff and in the end top boat was Serenity 2 with six species. Second boat was Gayle Force. Lukris found plenty of species, again six in all, but could not find them above the size limit. Nev (or Jonah) was crewing for Dave and clearly caused the problem!
April 15, Mid Week Match: The last of the early 2009 Mid Week matches before the summer recess was fished by four anglers. Just LSD were recorded with the results being: 1. G P Thomas, LSD 0.954 kg; 2. Ben Cooke (junior), bag 1.337 kg.
April 26, Roving Match: Eight anglers entered the Roving Match and all went to various parts of Pendine. Even though conditions were fine and a reasonable surf was on the beach just a few flounders were landed.
Results: 1 Phil (11 points) Hughes and John Hinde, four points.
May 10, Beach Rover: Eleven anglers, including one lady and four juniors, booked in at the Information Centre for a chin wag on best venues for a beach match. In the end, we decided to give Amroth a go (for a change). It was a glorious day, with a small surf, but some good colour, so we were, as ever, optimistic. The fish didn't share our optimism, however, and just a couple of undersized flounders were landed and a solitary silver eel for Karl Boyle. Karl's racking up the species quite nicely now!
Result: 1. Karl Boyle, silver eel 0.327 kg.
May 22, Flexible Venue Match: Six anglers congregated again at the Information Centre to try and decide where might be best on the day (night!). It was called as a beach rover and some went to Amroth again (strange!) and some to Lydstep. The Lydstep call proved to be the right one, with a couple of LSD coming to father and son Cookes, with just our resident Birmingham Navy member collaring an LSD at Amroth.
Results were: 1. Steve Cooke, LSD 0.747kg; 2. Ben Cooke (junior), bag 1.613 kg; 3. John Hinde, LSD 0.539 kg.
May 24, Dinghy Match: Just the one boat ventured forth for the latest of the dinghy matches, Lukris. Dave was far more confident having got rid of Jonah Nev and replaced him with the Mem Sahib Chrissie, and his confidence was not misplaced. Lukris recorded nine species, including a near club record starry smooth hound of 3.50kg for Chrissie
May 30, Amroth Night Owl: Eleven anglers, including one junior, booked in for the next in the Night Owl series. It was good to see Mike Williams having a go after the poignant day we'd all had at Idris's funeral the day before. Bass, LSD and grey gurnard were registered. No smooth hounds unfortunately, which were the target species, but a junior showed us how to do it!
Results: 1. Ben Cooke (junior), LSD 0.822 kg; 2nd Stevie Lewis, bag 2 .658 kg; 3. Nev Andrews, bass 0.810 kg.
